Newbe golf cart question
 

Hi everyone,
I just bought a home in TV which I will hopefully rent when I can for one year. I have gotten varying opinions as to whether to buy a gas cart or electric cart. Some of the reasons it has been suggested gas over electric, i.e. renters will not know how to charge the batteries, they will not know how far they can go without a charge, they will get stranded, etc. I plan to buy used. I really do not enjoy the gas carts due to the noise and gasoline odor but I have received a couple of strong opinions to go with gas. It would be helpful to hear from others on this.

Ultimately, it comes down to your personal preference. People who like/want electric carts have their reasons for why they go that route...........and the same holds true for those who prefer gas carts. It's really a matter of how you want to justify it to yourself. Either will get the job done and last a good long time with proper maintenance.

I was in your position about 1 year ago. I bought a designer that I planned to rent for a year or two. I decided on a gas cart for the very reasons you note above. I was advised that a gas cart was much more renter friendly. I have been happy with my decision so far.
When I move down full-time in another year or so, I may end up buying an electric cart, but for renters and my occasional visit, I still think gas is the way to go.
As with all things, it's a matter of opinion... but hope this helps a little.

I personally like electric. It's true that they don't have the range of the gas carts but for $30/year ****aid will bring your cart home if you break down. They are like AAA. Don't forget golf cart insurance for about $60/year.

If I was renting a home, I would likely have a gas cart for the renters. I have no experience at being a landlord, nor have I ever owned a gas cart, but...

The batteries are the heart of the electric cart and need some care. This is not something I would expect my renters to worry about. After you get here, choose what you like and trade in the other.

...you should know that there is often strong opinions on TOTV, and there is always strong opinions on this topic....but mostly everyone on the forum is pretty tame...

That's something that the admins do because I mentioned the name of a company.

I have lots of experience with renters. I have both gas and electric carts available for them, however I strongly encourage renters to use gas. Renters don't usually know how to properly care for batteries. They will overfill, use tap water, or even don't fill at all, or forget to charge. All of which cause issues with electric carts. I usually insist they use gas. I have one tenant that has been coming for 6 months for several years who wants electric. They know how to take care of an electric cart. But they are the exception. Everyone who wants electric will tell you they know how to take care of them. I can assure you from first hand experience most do not.

Speaking from a first time renter's perspective, I don't think I would rent a house with an electric cart as I have no clue on how to maintain an electric cart. I would rather not have to think about cart maintenance during my all too brief visit to TV. Just my 2 cents.

Probably the name of a company that does not advertise on TOTV. Odd though, because I see many service providers that are recommended by name here without the censor and who do not appear to advertise. Maybe it depends upon who does the referring because I had understood that referrals, as a service to other TVers, were encouraged. It makes sense that self-promotion would be discouraged.

Hi Leenie..It looks like the people who rent or the landlords who rent to renters all like the idea of gas when renting a house. I guess I would go with
the gas and when you come full time, (hopefully soon!!) you can always go to electric. :posting:

Hubby and I rented a place for two weeks which had an electric cart, no really good directions on how to care for it or what to use on windshield to clean, just a paper on fridge with some things to keep it maintained. Nothing there to actually clean the windshield with either. Take out the golfcart, go under one of those underground tunnels and it just stopped dead for no reason apparent to us and yes, we charged it after every trip. Pretty scary thing to happen in a tunnel. I will go with gas when I get my house built.
