Gas Fireplaces in Electric Only Homes
 

When we visited the villages last year, someone mentioned that in the all E homes, it is possible to have a LP gas talk "in the garage" in support of a Summer kitchen. Anyone have any comments on this information. Was thinking that if this is possible, why not in support of a gas fireplace. Anyone ever seen anything like that in TV? Thx, BJ

I was told that the LP gas tanks are buried in the yard.

Life safety code says no tank bigger than 10# (1/2 size grill bottle) indoors.

What about if we wanted to have a gas generator in case of a major power outage, .........due to a hurricane or major storm. Is that allowed?

We were thinking of having our electric fireplace, changed out to propane. In VA, we could "disguise" the tank, by having it enclosed in a 6' tall chimney like cover. The structure was sided to match the house, and a door was built into the structure for easy access and removable to the tank. Does anyone know if such a "chimney" would be permitted here?

There are homeowners in TV that have the LP gas tanks buried in their yards. I'm not there yet, but I will have one buried when I build.

What about the generator question? I have one here, up north, and can't imagine not having one................

I have never heard that gas generators were not allowed.

Whole house "gas" generators seem to be all over in the areas that are served by natural gas, but I can't recall seeing any in the areas not served by gas lines. If you are considering a "whole house" generator to be run on LP you will need to determine what size tank is necessary for it to run for the maximum amount of time (days) you expect to be without electric power. I assume that if a real weather disaster happens here they will not be delivering LP gas on a daily basis. Also, keep in mind that the fixed generators automatically run in exercise mode once a week for about 20 minutes, further depleating your on-hand supply.
We bought a preowned home with a fixed generator installed. It is nice to have, but I do not think I would be happy if I had to worry about constantally filling a tank. Also, consider whether natural gas will be supplied in the utility's lines in the event of a real disaster.
A few of our neighbors have small roll out gasoline generators, but complain about storing enough gas for a couple of days of running. Keeping gas fresh is also a problem, and most people store the cans in bushes to hide them and keep them cool.
Lots to think about when deciding on a generator.
