Still a wannabee but visited twice and I think palm trees are awesome.

They give me a tropical feeling and I feel they help me relax. JMO :)

I like them.

i like them because they are easy to grow and nice to look at. the part i dont like is they attract rats and cockroaches!

cybermuda 08-18-2011 02:08 PM

They do look nice, but not as nice as the large indigenous trees which provide a lot of shade

I read that most of the palms are native to southern Florida, so if we continue to have "harsh" winters then they could be in trouble

we need to be planting more native species so that the appearance of TV improves over time as they mature - unlike me :-)

miggster, first off I love all trees and enjoy the palms. How do you like the palms?

BowleesCreekYachtClub 08-18-2011 02:29 PM

The winter of 2009/2010 was pretty harsh with some deep frost. The landscape companies around The Villages were quite busy cutting down palms and hauling them out. If you plant palms then make sure they are of the "cold hardy" varieties. Allan.

Nice but

I would stay away from Queen palms. They are a lot of work and grow very tall.

I like them all...but the bearded palms always look like they could use a shave.

The lower branches are supposed to brown, thus the bearded look, but they always kind of look like they aren't doing well.

palms in the villages???

OK is it me or does anyone else think that the palms in tv need to be taken care of better?
driving down 441 i see many many palms that look as if they need trimming.
who could i contact to see if i can help out with taking care of these palms?
I am aware that the frost did alot of damage and you have to get rid of the old limbs so the new can come in.
thank you

You can contact Carrie Duckett at the CDD Customer Service Center. Her email is carrie.duckett@districtgov.org or phone at 352 751 3936. Carrie is the Customer Service supervisor, but anyone at the center should be able to assist you. Keep in mind that some of the landscaping needs are still the developers responsibility, and others are taken care of by golf course landscape crews. Carrie should be able to point you in the right direction.

One of our only issues here in Paradise is that the dead palm branches are not trimmed often enough for our tastes.

When there are no big issues, small ones fill our minds!!!!
