gov christie has ordered mandatory evac from long beach island and voluntary evac from the barrier island from seaside north; but no orders to leave atlantic city!

mayors of the local beachfront towns from pt. pleasant beach north through monmouth county are asking residents to head for higher ground; and most towns are opening emergency centers that will get residents to a county emergency facility.

water, batteries, flashlights and generators are pretty much gone from store shelves.

nyc mayor bloomberg REALLY has a mess on his hands! computer models are tracking the storm to follow the same path as floyd [i think floyd] that flooded lower manhatten from the battery to canal street!!!!

mass transit will likely shut down sat afternoon and resume when possible. trains to the hamptons will be cancelled tomorrow. mayor is asking folks to leave the low lying areas tomorrow and join friends on the high ground for dinner and the weekend! also suggested folks with cars in city garages may want to go and park them in park n ride lots - in n.j. or westchester county!

if you have kids/grandkids near the coastal areas of nj - this is no joke! make them evac if not for themselves but so the YOU don't have to worry!

Wouldn't you know, our neighbors here in the Villages just left this morning for their home in Long Island. :(

obxgal - oh, my, my! the island is supposed to really get slammed! if i was in tv with a house on l.i., i just wudda called the insurance man and upped my coverage! maybe they had valuables and important papers to recover before the storm hits. will say a prayer for them that they are safe!

angiefox10 - you're welcome...hope you enjoy the newspaper accounts! i gotta say, mayor bloomberg has his pre-planning so detailed on this one that he has plans already being implemented to move seriously people to other hospitals, challenged patients from nursing homes relocated and seniors moved into emergency centers! phew! and the north shore animal league is arranging for foster homes for pets that have to be evac'ed!

My sister lives in Ocean City and the city gave them a mandatory evaculation order for everyone to be out of there by 5 pm tomorrow night and residents of Cape May County out by 8 am tomorrow morning.

No...they just came down for the week with their grandson so they could go to Disney before school starts up. She said they're going over to their bungalow to close things up and probably stay with her sister in law till the hurricane goes through. They aren't due to be back down till October.

Who woulda thunk it that it would be safer in Florida than New York City when a Hurricane was about to strike??

Floridians are breathing a sigh of relief for themselves, but not for others who will have to deal with this enormous storm. It's larger than the state of Texas according to tv reports this morning.

I have relatives in New England and they live on the shore. Many hurricanes have come and gone, but this one is large, slow moving and has very strong winds. Howling winds for hours and hours are very dangerous. Storm surge can move houses, cars, anything in its path. Better to be safe rather than sorry. My prayers are offered for all to be out of harm's way.

Exactly! We were lucky this time....very lucky. A week ago, it looked like we'd get a direct hit in Florida.

Thanks for the information. I live in Central NJ less than 5 miles from the coast. We are getting ready to move to TV in November. Didn't think I would have to worry about a Hurricane in NJ. What ever will be will be, can't stop it. Where I live we aren't worried about flooding only sewer and storm drain back ups, also wind damage. We are as prepared as we can be. We checked to make sure that we have a couple of cases of wine so were good to go. Good luck to all in the storms path.

We live in Brick but just over the Rt. 70 bridge right next to Pt. Pleasant. All is quiet now but I'm sure it will be exciting later. We're hunkered down and hoping for the best. But now you start to look around and we see some awful big pine trees not that far from the house. Never gave them a second thought until today:sad: I'm sure we'll all get by with sunny skies in the forecast and TV's full time in our future.

Good luck to you. I have friends in Brick and not sure but good chance of flooding in their area.

The big problem with this one is that it is moving really slow and is huge with a lot of rain that is causing flooding. The winds aren't all that strong but if you have saturated ground, you do have the possibility of trees coming down. I understand it has been very wet in the NE this year so that could definitely be a problem. Overall, it was not really that bad as it went through NC with the exception of a lot of rain at the coastal areas. Here in the Raleigh NC area we had some wind and rain but really nothing to speak of compared to some other storms we have had this summerr.
