sports coverage in the Daily Sun
When I first came to the Villages,I picked up a copy of the Daily Sun and looked at the sports page.At first glance I see the headline-Coverage of the Yankees,Dodgers,Red Sox ,Braves.I said to myself sounds like a good sports section.Upon further reading I discover the coverage is of the local softball teams not the major league teams.I thought to myself, now I know the players on these teams enjoy the detailed coverage, their families enjoy reading about them and their friends probably do too.Sometimes the accounts of all these game stretches into two or three pages.I skip over all this because I could care less.I read the national sports and the rest of the paper. My question is what do other Villagers think of all this?I do read about the local high school sports teams and support them so please don't get the idea I'm anti-local sports news.If you are a participant of one of these softball teams,a friend,or relative don't bother responding.I know you like the coverage and that is understandable. But to me,overkill describes it.A line score and standings is all that's needed.Thoughts please.

The South and the West are all about high school sports followed by college. Just take a look at some of the sports complexes. If you get a chance, attend one of the local football games. The level of play is very competitive.

Dying Dailys
It is my belief that most US Daily newspapers are dying a slow death because of the instantanous nature of news and advertisement via the internet and talk radio and TV..
Here we have a newspaper that is thriving because of its focus on local activities; such as softball, TV Families, etc. I am NOT a softball player nor related to one, but do find it interesting to follow the expolits of my neighbors. I can also find out sports transactions, schedules, and standings on a daily basis; the detail of which I do not look for daily on the web. To each their own; but who am I to argue with success! |
If its there and you don't read it.......what is the problem?
I have no interest in baseball, but I'm not dissing somebody if they enjoy reading about it, and I just read what I have an interest in. |
I think the problem is it is overdone. But you right about one thing-I DON"T READ IT!

newspapers do a great job cleaning windows

Also are great under landscape cover to keep down weeds.

But when they do, it will be covered in the paper. There will probably be substantial bias toward that team and I will probably agree with it. I like almost everything about The Villages. Even a paper that isn't failing, even though it does lack some stuff I miss. |

I think that the Daily Sun covers all of the sports fairly well.
The softball scores and highlights are usually on its own set of pages and do not detract from the other sports news. When I read that the Giants beat the Jets and it is summer, I know I am on the softball page. I also get the Orlando Sentinel. Because it prints so early, I never get the later sports scores. The Daily Sun usually has all of the scores. |
The Daily Sun is mainly geared towards the residents and their activities, and I believe its main purpose is to sell homes and promote the lifestyle in The Villages. It has a very biased political slant akin to the views of the Morses. If you want in-depth coverage of local and national news along with a more balanced view of politics, sports, etc., its probably best to look elsewhere. We happen to get the Orlando Sentinel, but we also look at the Daily Sun if there are some local (Villager) sporting events we want to see results or coverage of.

For MLB baseball I use MLB.COM; and for NFL - NFL.COM. For MY teams such as the Brewers & Packers I also go to the old hometown newspapers. |
Orlando Sentinel
Someone said that the Daily Sun is politically slanted. Show me a newspaper that isn't. I have heard that the Orlando Sentinel is anti business and anti growth. I have never read the rag. Can anybody verify this?
