My golf cart is back fireing after which there is a strong odor of gas. Does anyone have an idea what the problem may be??? Thanks

Your governor is probably set too high. Common problem on Yamaha carts.

This happened to a cart that I was using during a 2010 rental and it was a quick fix at The Villages Golf Cart store in LSL. I think it was just a carb adjustment or a throttle cable adjustment. Only took a few minutes.

A backfire (at least on a car) is caused by the spark plug firing while the exhaust valve is open or partially open. I don't know much about golf cart engines but on a car it would be a timing adjustment or a burnt exhaust valve.

Can be caused by the throttle plate in the carburetor being held open just a bit when you let off the accelerator pedal due to an improperly adjusted throttle cable.
