Sumter Landing Square problems

Last sunday we spent around 6 hours at Sumter Landing. When we got back to our car which was parked in a rather remote spot near the Waterfront hotel, our emergency flashers were going off. I tried to start the car but the battery was dead. I had just put a new battery in the day before. Apparently someone tried to break in to the car, or shook it to activate the alarm.

My in-laws have had their car vandalized at Sumter Landing in the past. As I have written in the past, I still believe we need a lot more police presence at this square. The parking situation is crazy, with cars parking in any nook or cranny available. Pedestrians have been hit by distracted drivers. Oblivious speeders need to be slowed down by speed bumps.

As a Sumter county taxpayer, I feel public safety is being compromised and totally ignored at the square.

Part of the ambience of the Villages is NOT police presence. I would rather a few plain clothes cops who might nab a few people and let the word get around to the bad guys. Now a days with everybody with cell phones, if the cops have a "presence" the bad guys will no where NOT to go. Keep the bad guys guessing. IMHO

Thanks for the heads-up, but if you're expecting any sort of action or resolution, this is not the place to get it.

Your alarm system should NOT deplete your battery. They only go off for about a minute and then shutdown. You didn't say if you had any damage or anything stolen. Perhaps you still have a problem with your car or battery...

If you truly feel threatened; as a taxpayer, you should contact the county sheriff with your concerns and suggestions.

eremite06 -
sorry for your problem! i share your concerns re cars parked in every nook and cranny - but - in my experience i find that more golf carts park willy-nilly by market square! instead of uniformed police, i would like to see roaming parking 'attendants' [for lack of a better word] placing tickets on improperly parked vehicles! but maybe your desire for a greater uniformed police presence would prevent golf cart drivers from cruising around the area with their open containers!

we once returned to our car and found it would not start - but it was not a battery problem...the automatic anti-theft shut-down had been activated! had to have a local dealer send out someone the following day to reset the car so it would go again! good thing we were with friends who gave us a ride home that nite!!!
