Making Dog Food
 

I sure hope I am not alone but I must admit that I love my two Doxi's! To make sure that they remain healthy about a year ago I started making my own dog food. I cook once a week and freeze it for the week. We will be moving to TV ( Calumet Grove) in late Dec. and hope to find others who share my interest... Life has gone to the dogs...."giggle"

I used to cook for my golden retriever mix, Max when he was alive. Dog food, no matter what the brand, wasn't good for his skin. Poor puppy loved dog food, but didn't do well with it. I cooked for him for years and he loved the food. I remember one time we took him to the boarding kennel. We were going to be away for a week or so. I brought along his food, individual servings, cooked and frozen, for his meals...they just had to be microwaved. When I returned to pick him up, the kennel staff said they felt Max ate better than they did... ;) I miss that puppy, he was a great dog and he'd eat most of what I made for him,.....except zucchini...that was in and out of his mouth faster than you could say his name!

I used to make liver biscuits for my dogs when we were showing them - a Gordon Setter and a wire-haired Dachshund. But their regular food was just Iams.

spinach is a no go for my two....

These are the peanut butter versions,
Two cups of flour
1 cup of peanut butter
1 cup of milk
1 tbsp of baking powder
Mix it up and roll it out about 3/8" and use a cookie cutter to make the shapes you want. My cookie cutter is shaped like a doggie bone. LOL (Pet Smart has them)
Bake in the oven at 350 degrees for 20 minutes

Liver treats:

Chevelle's Favorite Liver Bait
(Usenet: Official Rec.Pets.Dogs.Misc Treat Cookbook)
1 lb. finely ground raw liver (grind in food processor – yuchh) 1 c. flour
1/2 c. cornmeal 1 to 3 T. garlic salt
optional: eggs, cottage cheese, grated cheddar cheese or parmesan, oatmeal, other grains, grated carrots or apple, several cloves of crushed garlic instead of garlic salt
Mix together. Spread on a lightly greased piece of tin foil on a cookie sheet. It is very thick -- like wet concrete! Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. When it is done, peel off the tin foil, break the liver into small pieces, and then freeze in packages to fit your needs. This bait will keep without refrigeration for at least a week if it isn't in the sun or extreme heat; it breaks up into tiny pieces using only your fingernails; it doesn't go mushy; and dogs will do just about anything for just a crumb of it! It will keep for several weeks in the refrigerator; it can be frozen and refrozen numerous times, and it thaws in less than 5 minutes! To make crunchy bait, bake until it looks like a biscuit.
