Is it possible that if the wires are reversed (not installed properly) during installation in your golf cart, that your phone/GPS plug-in will fry?

Yes, it is very possible. Also, depending on how you came up with 12 volts would also be a concern. Many times people have hooked up 2 -8 volt batteries to these units and came up with 16 volts and that is too much voltage for most items.
