Comcast's "ConstantGuard" security software

It started about a month ago. When I opened PayPal or EBay secure web sites I could not log in. The login keystrokes came out as sequential numbers. For example, "john" became "4567." I called EBay and PayPal and they said (correctly) that they just process whatever characters are sent to them.

The desktop is still on warranty. Hewlett Packard tried and tried, to their credit, even sent a new wireless keyboard and mouse, but that was not the problem. (anyone need a brand new wireless keyboard/mouse?)

Finally, I contacted a Villages Computer Club member, Don Kobe. Don sent me a link with several solutions. The first few did not help, but this one did:

I uninstalled Comcast's Constant Guard security software and the problem finally vanished.

I contacted Comcast, but the responder seemed defensive and unwilling to recognize they had a software "bug."

Comcast installed Constant Guard when they installed my Comcast telephone. I was noticing high CPU times and checked and found it was Constant Guard doing that. I uninstalled it and everything else he installed that day.

All went back to normal.

Comcast bug

THAT IS SCAREY! You have enough problems surfing the internet much less a Big Corporation installing a BUG! :cus:

I also had Constant Guard installed when I upgraded my Comcast-provided Norton a year or so ago. Soon I had nothing but problems. I uninstalled Constant Guard, keeping just the Norton Security and the problems went away. When it was time to upgrade again, I found the option to just download and install Norton, and things are still fine. Constant Guard is nothing by trouble.

The IT guys at my old job used to say, "It's not bug, it's a feature."

I have a scheduled triple play with Comcast for installation and they said they would not include the 'constant guard' according to my request to not have it. They are working on perfecting it and it can be downloaded in the future if it gets improved.

Good Advise

Thanks Jim,

I also hear there are better wireless routers that increase signal and speed.

Seems like the Apple Folks have this all down pat.
