Gang of punks pick on the wrong 65 year old bike rider.

In Reading PA a pack of teenage thugs pushed a 65 year old man off his bike and two jumped him, assaulting him. The man pulled out a handgun and justice ensued.

One of the rare times a story of a man defending himself with a legal handgun is printed. I thought I'd share.

Here are some facts for you.

Fact: Of the 2,500,000 annual self-defense cases using guns, more than 7.7% (192,500) are by women defending themselves against sexual abuse.

Fact: When a woman was armed with a gun or knife, only 3% of rape attacks are completed, compared to 32% when unarmed.

Fact: The probability of serious injury from an attack is 2.5 times greater for women offering no resistance than for women resisting with a gun. Men also benefit from using a gun, but the benefits are smaller at 1.4 times more likely to receive a serious injury.

Fact: 28.5% of women have a gun in the house.

Fact: 41.7% of women either own or have rapid access to guns.

Fact: In 1966, the city of Orlando responded to a wave of sexual assaults by offering firearms training classes to women. Rapes dropped by nearly 90% the following year. ABC News, July 17, 2001

Think that use of a firearm might be under reported. Really.

No where in the article does it say that the 65 year old was legally carrying the handgun. It is very possible that 65 year old man may be sued successfully for wrongful death by the teen's family. All depends on the lawyer they hire. Even if the teen's family does not win a wrongful death case, the 65 year old will probably be charged tens of thousands of dollars by his defending lawyer.

Figmo has the number of self-defense shootings in the US as 2.5 million per year? Seems very high. Are you sure about those numbers?

If 41% of women own guns, what sense does it make that only 28% have them in the house? Where would the others keep them?

The Police didn't charge him with anything. I think the legality of the gun is obvious.

I guess you would have rather the bicycle rider were beaten into a coma or even killed rather that defend himself?

Kudos to the bike rider. He's got both sides of the aisle covered - he's going green (biking in PA at this time of year??) and demonstrating the need for the 2nd Ammendment!

When I was working and traveling late at night to meetings and back home, I always kept my loaded pistol in my vehicle.

Only 13.2% increase in access.

The higher percentage is when the firearms are in the house but don't actually belong to the lady of the house. They are the husbands, sons, or some other member of the household, but the lady of the house has access to them.

Google "Gun Facts, Version 5.0, 2008," that is the latest version that I have, there might be a newer one out there. you will learn lots of amassing things about the use of firearms and also cure you of some of the myths concerning firearms.

"The man pulled out a handgun and justice ensued."

I really like the way you put that. You made my day. Thanks! :coolsmiley:

This was justified self-defense by the bike rider. He was a licensed owner and was legal carrying the gun. The teens who tried robbing him had committed 3 other robberies in the past hour.
