WalMart PC Milk Pricing
Have I just missed this in the past...? I went to buy a 1/2 gallon of milk at WalMart and found the following for their house brand:
Fat Free $2.08 1% $2.18 2% $2.28 Whole $2.38 |
I guess we need someone to price the house brand milks in the other grocery stores so we can make a comparison.

Well there is an answer. Cows produce milk. Some percent of milk is butterfat or cream. Skim milk has less butterfat then 1% which has less then 2% etc. Holstien cows produce about 50% more milk then Gurenseys or Jersys. Think Black cow vs Brown cows. However buttterfat or cream in the cows that produce less milk is much much higher. We had Gurensey cows that would produce 50% cream. So whats a farmer to do. They either have or buy the right amount of higher cream content milk to mix with the lower % content milk to make the various types of milk sold. So if I make 1% milk I have to get less of the higher cream content milk from the lower producing cows then if make 2% or whole milk. So you can blame the cow. Or think cream. Which is higher priced. The more I can remove to sell as cream the less I can set the milk price.

12ridehd is right. I grew up on a dairy farm. The cream is more valuable. Some store have had this price differential for years.

Yep...last two responses are correct...i grew up in the country too. But I like the explanation that higher fat, higher calorie items, like whole milk vs. skim milk, should cost more. Maybe I would save calories and money.

We stopped buying milk at Walmart - seemed to go sour a few days prior to sell date.

the answer is marketing.....more skim,1% and 2% milk is sold than whole, so pricing is calculated according to demand. More sold, it gets less expensive.
