Land Line Phone
 

We have been using our cell phones exclusively for our phone service and are now considering putting in a land line. What companies, here in TV, provide land line and who would you recommend?

We have Comcast for our cable service and wonder if they would have the best deals (haven't called them yet) or if there are other companies that would be better.

I value the input and opinions here on TOTV and want to hear from you before I make any calls or decisions.

What makes you think you need one? We both have cell phones with a microcell so we get perfect reception in our house here. We willl bring the microcell with us when we become Floridians in 3 weeks? I'm with you if I find I do need one. Who do I get it from etc. I want Comcast internet and Direct TV for TV. Do I bundle a land line (I repeat if I need one) with Comcast? :highfive:

need a land line. I am constantly forgetting my cell phone, or forgetting to turn it from vibrate/silent to on, or forgetting to bring it inside from my golf bag, golf cart, etc. If it's in my purse, where on earth did I leave my purse?

I think it's easier for men, who always keep it on their belt or in their pocket. I often wear clothes without a belt or a pocket.

When/if I have the big one (heart attack or stroke), I will feel much better if I can crawl to where I know the land line phone is located, or send one of my visiting granchildren to call 911. Also, if a visitor or a grandchild has a medical emergency, I will know where the phone is.

I have Centurylink land line (very basic, around $20 per month, plus DSL plus Directv with bundled service (a $5 discount). I still get 2 bills - Centuryline has the DSL and landline on it (guess they could never figure out the bundled billing), and a Directv bill.

I have Xfinity and also want to install at least one land line for emergency purposes

We have Ooma. After the initial purchase, it's just $3.47 (tax) a month.

We have the Magic Jack and it is only $19.99 per year, local and long distance anytime. We have saved hundreds of minutes on our cell phones. The Magic Jack is a plug in to your computer but now there is the Magic Jack Plus you don't have to have with a computer. We are sticking to ours just because we always have our computer on.

Xfinity
 

Does Xfinity require a land line? I called Direct TV and they said a land line is not required. We are in Chicago area and Direct TV does require a land line. I'm don't understand why it does here but not there. :loco:

We have been here five years and used cell phones exclusively for the first two. we eventually got a land line with Comcast mostly due to two reasons: cell phones are not reliable during storms and always have to ultimately rely on a battery; and friends and neighbors who do not have free long distance would 'kindly' let us know what a pain it is for them to reach us. Have been very happy with our service which is bundled for Internet, cable and phone.

I have OOMA where I live and really like it also. Magic Jack Plus also seems very good. I may try it too.
One caveat: if the power goes out those won't work unless you have power backup like for a computer. They have to be plugged in to operate. That may be true for others as well. Good ole Ma Bell's worked no matter what!

I'm pretty sure we'll get OOMA as well. If power goes at least you have the cell.
If you have GMAIL you can make outgoing calls for free in the US. but after 2012 it might not be available.

If you still want a "real" land line and desire to save $, you can also get a minimum plan and rely on Google voice for free long distance.

There are lots of options.
