Does the county that you live in TV, do anything on the property taxes for veterans or disabled vets? In NY LI where I live they cut some of your taxes. Thanks

You can find the kind of information you're looking for Sumter Co. at:

Sumter County Property Appraiser - Ronnie Hawkins, CFA - Bushnell, Florida - 352-569-6800 -

Any questions about this should be directed to the appraisers office.

Also, when I worked for the NYSDMV there was a provision for the waiver of fees for registration processing under Federal Title 38, US Code Chapter 39. Unfortunately, I have been retired for enough years that I don't remember many details or if there has been any changes.

Title 38, US Code Chapter 39 is a federal program where disabled veterans under certain circumstances can apply for funds to purchase a motor vehicle with the amount being determined on the degree of disability.

I think FL DMV has provisions for waiving fees for disabled vets, but I know little if anything about it. I do know that in NY purchase under the federal title & code had to be certified by an automobile dealer.

There are three possible sources where information or help can be obtained; The VA, an automobile dealership if they've experience a purchase under the federal provision, and the FL DMV.

Don't know if you were looking for this kind of information, but I thought I'd present it just in case!

Yes they do, if you have a VA issued service connected disability rating. If you are rated 100%, you will not pay property tax on your homestead. Your surviving spouse will also enjoy the property tax exemption after your death. You will also qualify for a special license tag for your car which, among other things, allows you to park in handicapped spots etc.

If you are rated less than 100%, but nevertheless have a service connected disability rating, they will knock and additional $5,000 off the taxable value of your homestead. You will only have to submit the proof once; it rolls over automatically after that.

The State of Florida has a number of other benefits for all vets, not just disabled vets. See, generally, Florida Department of Veterans Affairs - Your First Step in Accessing Information & Benefits Available to Veterans
