where can I go to find out what is happening at the squares, etc?

In the paper.
 
The Villages Sun lists all enternatainment activities.

But there must be someplace else too. Friends of ours had tickets for "Three Tenors" last night that had to be purchased well in advance and I didn't see that advertised.

Just go to THEVILLAGES.COM and click on the Lifestyle tab and Live Entertainment.
