Rounded Corners

This may sound like a silly question but is there a practical reason why you would want rounded corners to your walls versus the traditional square corner or is it an aesthetics decision?

Mostly for the look it gives. However rounded corners do not chip like 90 degree corners.

I call them bullnose corners and I love the look. I don't know of any construction advantage of having bullnose or rounded corners over the traditional square corners. We had them in our house when we lived in North Carolina and my only complaint was the difficulty in transitioning from one color to another on the walls. You had to (hire) be an excellent painter. Bullnose corners looked really nice with our arched doorways too.

Is it a significant price increase for the upgrade? I hadn't thought about painting a different color on a different wall would require hiring someone.

Yes it is an increase. There are two kinds of rounded corners too.

All these choices!

I'm not a good painter, @shcisamax. Neither is my husband, so hiring someone to get the line straight was a better solution on the bullnosed corners. It is more expensive and you have to consider the molding; expecially if you are using chair-rail or crown molding.

We love the look of the rounded the corners. Bkcunnungham, excellent point about painting, transitioning or where to stop.

What are the "two" kinds of rounded corners. ugh. And good point about moulding. Hadn't even considered that.

Crown molding and base molding aren't problems with rounded corners. I have them and really like them. Painting two different colors that meet at the corner is a bit tricky, but one can use blue painters' tape to make a straight edge. I'll attach a couple of pictures.

Thanks for posting. It definitely does look nice...guess that is one check in the upgrade column. :)

That is beautiful, Pooh. Really nice. Our house in NC had about an inch at the bottom of the bullnose that beveled, would that be the right word, or got smooth for the molding.

The finish carpentry in our house is so nice. At the end of construction, a crew of women came in and caulked or sealed all of the woodwork.

We are so pleased. Your corners are like ours, Pooh.

For some reason it appears that I'm having trouble inserting the link. If the link doesn't appear just google "paint tool for rounded corners."
