Check your Credit Card Statements

Today while I was checking my credit card statements with my receipts, I found two restaurants, one at Spanish Springs and the other at Sumter Landing, that charged more than I authorized. Called credit card company to inform them of this. They are going to investigate this claim. Please be sure and check your statements with your receipts. If you want the names of the restaurants, PM and I disclose the names to you.

This apparently happens a lot around here. I have had a restaurant put in two different claims in one day on my card. Others in the neighborhood have had tip amounts added to their cards even though they paid a tip in cash. Others have had the tip amount increased.

What did the management of the restaurant have to say??

If you pay the tip in cash make sure you X out the tip line.

I always check my receipts against the credit card - usually about two or three days after I eat there. I go online an look at the credit card transactions.

It is always a good practice to check all credit cards online to make sure they are what you paid on a weekly basis.

Please let the rest of us know who these crooks are. One of the advantages of TOV is to offer info and help to other residents. Keeping these places unknown only hurts the rest of us.
We charge our food and drinks and then they alter the tip, etc. I guess I need to keep all reciepts now and actually check them with the statement. A real PITA.

Rather than X out the tip line, I write "IN CASH."

True, but necessary these days.

There are people out there who want to hurt you financially.

My mother's Soc Sec number was just compromised, and I am running around trying to get things straightened out. Now THAT'S a PITA !

My wife retired from our local PD as the executive assistant to the Chief ( civilian position ) and there are few scams that surprise her and this one occurs more often than you would expect. My wife got me in the habit of writing out the amount on the charge slip. Still, I'm not as diligent of checking my statements as I should be, so thanks foe the heads-up.

About a year ago, it seems to me, there was a waiter at one of our favorite restaurants who added a little to his tip on a regular basis. Management heeded customer calls and the young man was doing the perp-walk out of the place within a day or two. They did not hesitate to call the law. Wal-Mart does this as policy because it puts the fear of God and the law into the hearts of all of their employees.

Luckily I've never had a problem in The Villages such as has been described here. When we dine out I always use my credit card, always put the tip on the bill and always make sure the total comes to an even dollar amount. For instance, the bill comes to $19.93, I'd add $4.07 as the tip and that brings the total to $24.00. It makes it very easy to see something that might be amiss when I'm checking the bills.

I check my charge cards and banking accounts on-line daily. It has become such a routine that it takes me less than 5 or 10 minutes. I do this right after I check the obits up north to make sure I'm okay.

:agree:

This is funny, but I do the very same things, and I agree on the time it takes. It is WELL worth it !

I check the obits too. OK for now. PHEW !

My wife and I are both amateur radio operators (hams). We get a monthly magazine named QST, which has a "Silent Key" column, listing names and callsigns of recently deceased "hams." I joke with my wife that I haven't seen either of our callsigns under the Silent Keys, so I guess we're OK for another month.
