North-South Travel
I will be travelling, by car, from NY to TV. I want to avoid the Balt. Wash. I-95 route and am looking to go around via 301. Can someone please give directions with Hgwy exit numbers and routes that I should be taking? For the most part, I will be travelling I-95. I might be travelling from either L.I. or possibly upstate NY (I-81) Albany.

I've done 81 south to 66 east to 17 back to 95 south. That cuts out Balt.-Wash.DC. Works well from Syracuse and Rochester. From Buffalo I use 79 at Erie,Pa. to 77 to 26 to 95. |

Rye, NY to The Villages, FL - Via 301 - Google Maps As an alternate you could consider going via the Chesapeake Bay Bridge route: Rye, NY to The Villages, FL - - Via Bay Bridge - Google Maps Have a safe journey... or... "Whatever!" http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_8Un21I2WeX...SmileyWink.jpg p.s. You can move the A marker to change the starting location up north. |

Consider the beltway traffic patterns to be the equivalent of NYC/ suburbs traffic. Just figure you will go through Dc the way you would if you were planning to drive 95 south through NY.

Take a look at I70 West off I695 Baltimore. Go to Frederick MD and 340 S. Grab I81 or 340 to 522 S to I66 and 17 as previously suggested. I think 301 is going to be a bad choice. Lights and traffic.

95
Have done the trip from Albany several times. DC is not bad on the weekends, but on weekdays, you have to go through between 10-3, or after 8 pm. But not really as bad as it sounds.

Suggestions for hotels in Virginia, just south of Washington DC
On our trip to The Villages, we are planning to stay one night somewhere between Washingon, D.C. and Richmond VA. Anyone has a suggestion for a good hotel?
|
We stayed at the Kimpton in Alexandria, VA in the old part and it was charming, elegant, and wonderful. Check it out. We loved every minute of the hotel and the location and it was great for getting on the road the next day avoiding traffic.

We stayed at the Red Roof Inn in Richmond just off I-95, since we were traveling with our dog, and Red Roof Inn's are OK with pets. Big mistake. The hotel was your usual roadside moderately priced chain hotel, reasonably clean and modern, but the noise in that area is beyond belief. The dog never did settle down. I've never been in a noisier place in my life, between the trucks on I-95 and the local traffic near the hotel. If I do that trip again, I'll stay someplace further south.

IF you are taking 81, go through Harrisburg and go south on 15 and south on 270 and take the other side of the beltway to I95.
I used to travel from northwest NJ and that was my route. Z |
