Packing....any words of wisdom??
 

Just started packing....my back hurts already. :cryin2: I started with what I have the most of....photos. How can one family accumulate so many photos? I just can't toss any of them. I'll separate from what I will actually put in my home and the ones that will just go in storage. I suppose the attic will not be a good storage place for them?? Where do you all store your photos you aren't using??? probably a shelf in the closet?? Oh how I don't want to clutter my closets in this new house.

I suggest you scan them into your computer and give the originals to family! This way you still have the pics, but they won't clutter up your closet!

Ditto Scan them into your computer. thousands of them then backed them up on an external drive. There really is no safe place to store them otherwise.

Getting them into your computer is a good idea, but you first might want to go through the pictures and discard some. It's easier than you think. If some are quite old, you might not remember where the picture was taken or who is in it. Why keep those. You may have duplicates of many. Be strong and spend some time doing that. It's might not seem easy at first, but as you go through, you might just realize you're keeping pictures you just don't really need any longer and soon, you'll have made your treasures a little more manageable.

Personally, I keep my extra photos in the house...too humid in the attic. Mike and I spent time over the years weeding out pics we no longer needed. Now, I've got lots and lots of color slides that need to be put into the computer. We've weeded through them, discarding pictures we took that really aren't that important any longer. It's work, but it's really fun, too.

Here’s what I did with photos....first I took them all out of the albums. Yep! Exactly the opposite of what we spend most of our lives doing or trying to do. I weeded out the ones that weren’t important and then sorted the remainder into piles according to time-frames, locations, or people involved. Then I put them into clear plastic boxes such as those in the links below and labeled the boxes. I was then able to fit all of the plastic boxes into one large plastic tote, which I keep on the floor of a closet. It’s really easy for me to locate a photo or group of photos now and I’m amazed at how much less space they take without the albums. I agree that it would be ideal to scan them all into the computer, but that is a very time-consuming task in itself.

All great ideas! I only have one daughter so as you may guess most of them are of her. Scanning would be the best for me as I can't bear to discard any of them. With our first grand baby on the way, I should make room for all of the grand baby photos! I guess scan older ones and keep the physical photo of newer ones. I knew I could count on some suggestions from TOTV! Sweet!

We put up extra shelving in our closets for things just like this. Before we came down we sold a lot of things, had a garage sale to sell more things, gave a lot of things away, threw a lot of things away, and when we got down here guess what? Somehow we still ended up moving some things we shouldn't have. It's kind of a bittersweet thing to leave a life behind but your new life awaits!....How's the storm doing up there? :cold:

Extra shelving
 

The extra shelving is something we'll have to do as well for extra storage.
The storm is coming in slowly. Not too bad out. Supposed to pick up later on and then a second storm coming in tomorrow. We are getting around 10 inches. Not the greatest, but we will deal with it and consider ourselves lucky that it's February 29th and this is our first real snow. :cold::cold: It's 30 degrees.

These are very good quality containers. We use them at work. Also similiar ones at Office Depot.

Also, I have the extra shelf in the closet above my regular shelf. That space is usually unused but works great to store slides in carousels that my Mother had. I need to go through about 10,000 slides (that's not a mistake!). Ugh.
Maybe I need a snow day/week/month for indoor projects like that. Fat chance when it's 71 degrees outside!

since you have made the plunge to move to TV be sure to re-evaluate your existing furniture.
We are one of many, may who moved all our furniture to only get new stuff here.

If we had to do it again we would have gotten rid of most of our living room, patio and dining room stuff.

Two big factors (there are no doubt more) affordability and emotional attachment.

We are only transporting tv's, washer/dryer, upright freezer, one antique table I'm in love with and some artwork. We will buy all new furniture to go with our light and airy decorating scheme.

every home was sold furnished...didn't think they could use our underwear....giggle....

Scan them? And put them in a few digital frames... or make them your screensaver on your tv if its capable :-)

If you are packing breakable stuff like china or accessories that break, go to Sam's Club and get boxes of bubble wrap. Not one thing got broken or scratched. I wrapped table legs in it etc.

Pack lite and carry a big stick! What? Teddy Roosevelt? I did? Oh well...
