??for people who rent out their home, but use it themselves

I know I'm not making myself very clear, but I don't know how to phrase the question right. We came for a LSV, loved it, went home, bought a house without going inside until we came down to sign the papers. That was 2 years ago already! Came back for 3 days for paperwork and run around get furniture, etc. Came again for another 3 days before we rented it out for the winter seasons. We can finally come down again for more than a few days, and hope to be able to again later this year.

My question is - what do you do with things you don't want to bring back and forth again? Personal items, perhaps a nightgown, slippers, maybe even some clothes? Shampoo, toiletries that don't go bad and the like? Maybe a favorite pillow or throw or personal pictures to put out during your stay? Do you put a storage closet in the garage with a lock? If you don't want everyone to read where you keep your "stuff" please PM me. Since we rent it out, I can't just leave things in the drawers and bathrooms.

Thank you.

Some people use a closet in a spare bedroom and put a lock on it. Some people put a storage closet in the garage. Some people store stuff in the attic. There is also self-storage that can be rented in TV.

Many of the models have two closets in the master bedroom. If they do put a lock on one and use that. Another option might be a linen closet if it was big enough. A lockable storage cabinet in the garage would also work.

Your idea of getting a storage unit in the garage is a good one. We purchased a unit for the garage from Home Depot online which included free shipping. It's heavy plastic, approx 6 feet tall, 3 feet wide and 2 feet deep and lockable. As I remember it was in the $125 range.
Our original plan was to rent our home out but it turned out we were able to retire early so we now use the locker for storage for tools and gardening supplies.

Thank you for such a quick reply! I didn't even think of the attic since I don't remember seeing it! So I'm guessing there aren't even stairs to get up and I don't remember a ladder.

A closet in the garage was my first thought. It will give us a project to do.
I want to feel like this is our home too and start making it more our own.

Thanks!

Rent

Just don't rent it .who's bed do you sleep in when you there ?

I put everything in plastic containers and keep those in the guest bedroom closet. We don't keep anything of value there and over a 4 year period have had no problems and no complaints. We do keep some clothing items and toiletries in the plastic containers. I figure if anything goes missing someone needed it more than us!

Can you rent directly or does it go thru the management office for a commission?

You can have an attic pull down stairs installed. I think it cost around $200.00 give or take a few $$.
I would only use plastic bins to store things. I would not store liquids such as shampoo, makeup or lotions because of the intense heat that the attic will get. Just go to the drug store and buy the small samples and throw them away when you pack up to leave.
I don't know if you could put a lock on the stairs. Perhaps renters are having to much fun and are to busy to care what's up there.

we keep an under the bed container in the guest bedroom and our golf clubs and a cpap in the closet. Takes up about 15 inches in the closet. Always tell the renters and never had anyone move anything. We also have a storage unit in the garage, but in the summer its too hot to leave clubs in it.

What is the best way to rent your home? Once our home is built, in Saibel, we will be renting it for a year, maybe 2, until we retire. Living in NY I'm a little nervous being so far away, but I know many of you rent with no problems. Any suggestions who to rent through? Heard going directly through TV doesn't bring in a lot of renters. I rented a home through thevillages4rent.com 2 times and had a good experience both times. Any suggestions?

We had a locker in the garage with a lock on the door. Everything else, we carried back and forth.
