Preparing lobster at home
Does anyone buy lobster tails at the market and prepare them at home? If so, where do you buy them and how do you cook them?

If you are buying tails they are probably already cooked.
Otherwise you just boil them for about 5 mins or til they turn red. Billy from Maine |
The gal at Sweetbay where we got our lobster tails told me to thaw the tails and cut them with scissors up the length of the tail, pull the meat out and lay it on top of the shell and brush it with butter. Then put it under the broiler and brush again during the cooking, which is done when the shell is red and the meat is white. Then serve them with melted butter with garlic. Really quite simple and makes a lovely meal for "dining" at home.

misread email - thought was talking about whole lobster and not tails. Could not figure out how to delete my post - sorry.

Thank you. Will go to Sweetbay today. Looking forward to trying at home.

Another option is to buy the tails, cut them through the shell in half length wise then melt some butter and garlic with fresh squeezed lemon and using a brush baste the meat side of the tails.
Put them shell side down on your BBQ and with low/medium heat cook for approx 5-10 minutes, covered is best, rebaste the meat, turn over meat side down and brown and get some grill marks. Take the meat out of shell, baste again and enjoy. |
The key is DON'T over cook them. They will become tough and chewy if overcooked.

Thanks. I went to Sweetbay and picked up two lobster tails, 5 oz. each. They were on sale for $6.99 each. I thawed, cut open hard side, pulled it out and then steamed for a little over 5 minutes. They were good, but certainly lacked the flavor of the ones at Longhorn. Next time I will try jackz's method on the grill.
