faucet water supply turn on/off?

For the push/pull type water supply shut off I have forgotten which does what.

When the water is flowing is the shut off out or in? Or to shut off the water push or pull?

btk: I had an opportunity to find out the other day. had to replace the innards for one of my toliets. The seales guy msled me. so after three tries finally got a seal. Oh pull out to shut off push in to open.....or is that push...just joking out to close in to open.
