Computer threat
 

:22yikes:In today's Daily Sun, p. 9, a small story about a malware infection (not a virus) that could shut down your Internet. The threat is so serious that the FBI has responded by setting up a safety net to protect against it. It hit my computer and I had to pay to have it fixed. Read the story.

Curious on how it "infects" computers! Does it come from making searches on the internet?? I went to the website the other person posted but didn't go into any of the tabs----yet!

I recently received an e-mail from a trusted friend who provided a link, with the suggestion that I'd find it interesting. I clicked on the link, which turned out to be a dumb ad. When I called my friend, he said he'd never initiated the e-mail to me with the ad link. Subsequently everyone in my address book was sent an e-mail from my ID (NOT from me) asking them to click on the link.

My question .... How do you know what links are safe? Like the one posted here by njbchbum. Is that a safe link?

Where do you look on the Toolbar to change "copy to everyone" setting? (I doubt I have it, since I've never had this problem before in ten years).

In my case, it was some type of infection, virus or worm that I downloaded innocently by clicking on a link provided by a trusted friend. It seems to have run its course, fingers crossed.

bare - i rarely click on a link that is emailed to me - even if from a friend. re the link i posted, i ASSUMED it to be safe since it was a story reported on national news.

when i want to research a topic on the internet i go to my norton search engine that comes with the norton security suite i use. it will then list the suggested websites; and each site indicates whether it is 'norton safe' and can be clicked on with reasonable safety.

If you continue to send e-mails to all those in your address book for Viagra and such, change your e-mail password. If that doesn't take care of it, let me know and I'll PM you a link to a free malware removal program. Hope this helps!:wave:

Thanks for the offer jnieman. The ad that my computer worm sent out from my e-mail address was for "work from home", but the next one might be for viagra or porn, which would be even more humiliating. I did change my password immediately. It's been a week and the problem hasn't occurred again. But now I don't trust Yahoo e-mail or links or the security of my internet provider.

My plan is to convert to gmail which most people seem to feel is superior to other providers. Friends in my address book are easy to notify. But it is such a pain to change my e-mail address with banks and credit card companies and real estate agents and homewatch and vets and doctors and dentists and gas and hydro and condo corp and department stores and hotels and accountants and financial planners, etc., etc., etc. Literally hundred of places to notify. And most of them aren't in my contact list. Oh well, I'm retired. :024:

This IS a serious threat. It knocks out your internet completely, whatever else it does
