I remember when...

on this forum in 2008 starting BEFORE the primary debates, etc, folks on here complaining over and over about how the government was all up in their business getting warrants and eavesdropping.

I recall the President, then not even the candidate yet, and after becoming the candidate going after the previous administration on this...

"WASHINGTON (AP) - The Justice Department made 1,745 requests to a secret court for authority to wiretap or search for evidence in terrorism and espionage investigations last year.

That's according to an April 30 letter from the department to the Senate that was first reported Thursday by the Federation of American Scientists.

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, which meets in secret to hear classified evidence from government attorneys, did not reject any of the requests, though judges did require modifications to 30 requests.

It was an increase over 2010, when the department made 1,579 requests.

The FBI also made 16,511 national security letter requests for information regarding 7,201 people last year. The letters allow officials to collect virtually unlimited kinds of sensitive, private information like financial and phone records."

As I read this, I was wondering if those folks are still around perhaps with other names or whatever and what they must be thinking now.

Not endorsing or criticizing this....just wondering why nobody cares any longer ?????

Is this a rhetorical question?

If not, maybe a letter to the NY Times may clear up the "why".

Nah; they won't print it. Just messing with you.

This was a major talking point here for the Obama supporters. I suppose they just simply dont care or ......

I am on team Romney, but I hope he continues with this practice. If your clean, you have nothing to worry about. These actions may just uncover a plot to kill Americans. I just don't get the paranoia or conspiracy some tremble about.

Do think you have to trade some liberty for security.

Cannot really find Obama doing all that much to change the Bush policies with respect to wiretapping.

It's the principle of the thing V.

You want to make a case for unlimited surveillance powers of the government over it's citizens, go ahead.

The point here is that the same guy who was outraged by the practice of "unwarranted surveillance" when he was running against George W. Bush, has quietly escalated the government's involvement in these procedures.

I say "quietly" because no major media outlet is calling him on his hypocrisy.

he is changing Bush's practice of wire tapping by promoting going way above and beyond anything Bush had in mind. Some Obama supporters would claim Bush was "invading privacy". And what would one call Obama's need for more access to individuals?
