This I'll Have Another story seems right out of Hollywood.
I'll Have Another wins Preakness Stakes over Bodemeister - More Sports - Gene Menez - SI.com
I keep on expecting this horse to walk up some steps in Philly and his jockey yell Adrian! |
It WAS a very exciting race yesterday. Watching the horse come up from behind did look like Hollywood staging. Nice job for horse and jockey. Just wondering if they mistreat horses the way they do greyhounds on the track. Does anyone know?

Some racehorses "retire" to become polo ponies...so I was told when we recently went to a polo match here.

Great Race
A little history. I saw "I'll Have Another" sell at Ocala Sales for a 11,000 as a yearling. (A horse nobody wanted).
Then I saw him sold for 35,000 as a two year old. Very cheap price. I was a foot away from him as they walked him before bringing into the ring. It's so nice to see horses that went for 400.000 left in the dust by "I'll Have Another". Hope he becomes a Triple Crown winner. |

To give you and idea it costs about a hundred dollars a day to keep a horse in training at any major track. I have never seen a horse mistreated at any track they are taken care of by very dedicated horsemen. As far as the race yesterday, I think he proved the Derby was not lucky, flash in the pan. He has the stuff, but Bodie is also a super horse, both were ahead by 9 lengths, and those behind them are great horses. There will be a few horses that skipped yesterday and will have had time off before the Belmont. I would love to see a Triple Crown winner it's been a long time, especially from a small time trainer & unknown rider. :eclipsee_gold_cup: |
It had been reported that the HBO Series "Lick" was cancelled because three orses were killed during filming;albeit not mistreatment horse racing ain't for sissies

I'll Have Another, just arrived at Belmont about an hour ago, 20 days in advance to get the feel of the track.

Taltarzac725, jimbo2012 and jblum315, thanks for the info on how horses are treated. Glad to know that because I would also love to see a Triple Crown winner and was feeling guilty watching the race (not any more though). As a long, long time greyhound foster mom it's hard to think that you are supporting an industry that is replete with crulety and horrors. Now I can cheer the horses on with a clear conscience.

Not to get into the problems with greyhound racing, I agree it's sad.
Glad there are foster moms like you, need more from what I understand. |
With Bodemeister out of the Belmont Stakes, it remains to be seen whether I'll Have Another has the stamina to go 1-1/2 miles on June 9th, a feat reserved for a true champion. You know how difficult it is to accomplish when it's been 34 years since last performed. Three grueling races in the space of 5 weeks is not easy for a race horse, especially at this level. Both Union Rags and Dullahan will be very fresh, having skipped the Preakness in favor of the Belmont and will probably offer the most competition to I'll Have Another. The next 3 weeks leading up to the Belmont should be very interesting in the horseracing world and I look for some incredible hype and some serious questions as to the June 9th outcome. In any case, it's all extremely exciting and I'm wishing all best of racing luck.
