Read the article below the video. He does address Romney's comment.

"Romney previously called the president 'naive' for announcing plans to withdraw troops by the end of 2014.

'Without getting into the campaign rhetoric of what [Romney]'s asserting, I think you’ve got 50 nations in NATO that agree to a plan in Afghanistan,' Panetta said on ABC's 'This Week.' 'It’s the Lisbon agreement, an agreement that, you know, others, President Bush, President Obama, everyone has agreed is the direction that we go in Afghanistan.'" from above linked article under video.

I am not sure what point you are trying to make here. In my opinion Romney's criticism was announcing the date publicly, not the date itself.

Is that what point you are trying to make ????

I think that it is stupid for any commander to tell the enemy when he will leave. All they have to do is wait and when he leaves step in and take over.

Frankly I think calling the president naïve was very mild.

These different POVs on the US Afghan pull-out are interesting.

We do need to get out of there; at least as far as the troops are concerned. Not sure how they are doing any good any more there now.

Again, you mention Romney when you started this thread so I assume you find fault with something he said or did and am curious what your point is with this thread ??????

My point is that Mitt Romney's position on the pull-out of troops from Afghanistan is very much folly. Jon Soltz: Romney Comes Out for Endless War in Afghanistan

"We are spending around $2 billion a week in Afghanistan. We have spent hundreds of billions in the war since it started just after 9/11. If it's safe to say that there will be no troop drawdowns, and an indefinite commitment under a President Romney, we'll be there for another four or eight years, depending on whether he won a second term. That's hundreds of billions of dollars." From above linked article.

This is such a foolish conversation. The only thing I read in your link to that OPINION piece has to do with ANNOUNCING A DATE PUBLICLY and nothing more.

While he may have said something about being against pulling out, I have never read it....nor seen it....now, he has been against ANNOUNCING THE DATE OF THE PULL OUT !!!

Guest 05-28-2012 12:21 PM

the more realistic position would be to agree to a troop draw down when a select list of conditions are met.

Any talk about scheduling how a war will unfold is nothing more than political campaign rhetoric.

Just look how well things are going in Iraq!!!! The other war that was supposed to be ended when the troops went home. If you buy that one I have two more for you. With little or no coverage and screening by the media of what gets reported we the people seem satisfied. Ask the troops who are still there.

The enemy will wait out the USA in Afghanistan knowing the war plans time table (even sounds ridiculous)....the enemy has no political agenda so they can wait us out and then do as they please.

Another example? How about what is happening in Yemen? The new terror haven.
