Spanish Springs Town Square Construction

I was by there today and was very disappoint that they appear to be building another sound booth in approximately the same spot as the old one. Anyone who has been to the concerts in the square know that if you sit facing the band you are looking directly into the setting sun. The band faces northeast because the sound booth is on the north corner of the plaza. If they repositioned the sound booth on the western corner of the plaza, the bands could face southwest and the audience would be looking to the northeast and not into the setting sun.
When I heard that the square was going to be renovated, I though for sure that they would move the sound booth. I thought that it was a no brainer, but evidently I was wrong.

Could be you were wrong. Whatever else one might think, I don't think anybody could accuse the Morses of being no brainers. ;)

Given the tall buildings on at least 2 sides of the square, maybe the bands can only play to one or 2 sides to avoid an echo bounceback. Let the music flow out and up the street, is maybe the theory....
What really bothers me is that they are going to take out much of the greenery and trees. No longer a park-like setting, but rather a concrete parking lot to bake everyone in the sun and maybe squeeze in more drinkers

asianthree 06-03-2012 09:10 PM

I thought they were replacing the short tree for a taller tree?

Bogie Shooter 06-03-2012 09:16 PM

Does anyone really know what is being done?

I emailed Janet Tutt to get the scoop on what they are planning to do for the maintenance period in June. Here is her email, so this should quell any rumors.

From Janet:

Good Morning again,

Ok..so, here is the list:

Resurfacing of the Square’s pavement, remove concrete within the internal area and sidewalk connectors, and reconstructed with new field pavers.
Reconstruction of existing Audio Equipment Enclosure (this is being accomplished by The Villages but they are using the closed square time to do the work so as not to disrupt a second time).
There will be a revision of the landscape material, there are 16 understory trees being removed (they have too low of a canopy, we have been having serious bee hive issues with the current trees and they create a maintenance mess on the square) and trees being replaced…there will be a net loss of 12 trees along the perimeter of the gazebo within the Square. The landscape designer has incorporated the four new trees in strategic places to marry with the new pavers/design.
Relocation of plumbing, electrical and irrigation lines.

This work is all WITHIN the Square area.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
I believe the “plans” are at Property Management’s office if you or anyone would like to view them. They modifications did have to go through the Town of Lady Lake and the application (incorporating the changes) has been approved. So we are good to go!

Have a great day.
Janet

Becareful what you wish for because if they did build a mono-rail it would be just another vehicle added to the traffic on the cartpaths....pedestrian,s bikes, carts, scooters, maintenance vehicles, cars (sometimes)

It sure is easy to criticize when you don't have all the facts.
Thanks for asking Ms. Tutt for the answer. Don't you just respect the way she quickly responds to a question.

Believe it or not, I had a similar thought going back a few weeks ago, but discounted it as impractical when I thought "would the benefit justify the expense?" Here are some thoughts on that:

If one were built, it should probably only have a max of 6 stations. Otherwise, it would take too long to reach one end from the other:
  1. Spanish Springs
  2. Mulberry Grove
  3. West of Buena Vista somewhee along Wedgewood Lane
  4. Lake Shore Landing
  5. Colony Plaza
  6. Brownwood
Of course no one will agree on the route and the debates would go on infinitum. If it were there, would many people really use it other than for a fun or tour ride?
You'd still need to get from your home to a station by auto or golf cart.
You'd have to return to the point of origin in order to get back home or go elsewhere.
Who would pay for it?

Beyond all this, it does sound like an interesting idea!

It's hard for me to understand why we are declaring the baby ugly before the baby is even born. I applaud TV for doing updates and renovations.

I think that all projects have sidewalk supervisors.:)

That's what makes it fun. I think....

Bogie... Exactly right. Janet responded to my email in less than an hour with the "facts" pertaining to the renovation at the square.

Going to the source is a lot better than speculation and rumors...

OK...carry on :D
