There'll be lots more. Dry winter and wet summer = sink holes.

Yikes. We live in the Village of Belvedere, but we're far away right now.

Does anyone know the location of this particular retention pond (see above quote) which is mentioned in the article??

The pond pictured that was empty and then full is in Belvedere.

Gracie, I thought the posted photos by Midge were of the ASHLAND pond. So there are not two different ponds involved????

I have now looked at the map. There is Belvedere and Lynnhaven and Ashland and Bonnybrook and they are all along Belvedere road. It is hard to know where one begins and the other stops.

There is a large pond on Belvedere Road that I surmise to be the Ashland pond since it is next to the Ashland rec center..and an adjacent pond that must have been the other one affected by the sinkhole.

The article and picture by the OP was not clear. If it was a reporter I imagine he/she wasn't clear as to where they were either.

In my attempts to help I have made this whole issue murkier. I am so sorry.

Someone who lives there will clear this up. My heart aches for people off campus who can't come check that all is alright.

According to the Poster who started this thread, the pond that dropped fifteen feet was in the Village of Belvedere. The pond in Midge's picture that had a sink hole was in the Village of Ashland.

By the way, thanks so much to the peeps who PMed me with offers to drive by my house. I very much appreciate your offers. Since we do back on ponds in Belvedere Village, this type of ambiguous thread is somewhat worrisome. However I do have a Home Watch company, plus I'm sure that neighbours would e-mail me if it was close to our house. But I do appreciate your kind offers.

I just wish the OP, Anlashokna, would clarify the comment that the pond is in Belvedere!

Chicken little was right!!!!

the sky is falling! the sky is falling! only this time it is reverse! the ground is falling,,, just wait you cant get insurance for sinkholes,,, the mortgage companies are next,, why would they loan money on house you would walk away from with huge damage,,, oh well the developer owns one of the banks,, here is one more piece in place for the evil empire to have there hand in our pockets as they would be the only bank to offer loans on property in the villages,, that is there dream come true via the back door! this place will start looking like a big piece of swiss cheeze! CHICKEN LITTLE YOUR ARE A GOD!

I noticed from the picture that the drainpipe was right next to the sinkhole. I've seen some homes in my area that have had drainpipes installed and the end pipe is directed toward the house's foundation. I'd advise everyone who has had any new gutters added to their homes that they go out when it's raining and see just where their water is going.

I tried searching the Sumter County Property Appraiser website for the parcels' owners names mentioned in this article but did not have much luck. Not sure which neighborhood these sinkholes were in though. Could be Ashland/Lynnhaven off of Belvedere.

The viilage of Beleverde is located just two streets past the postal/Bonnybrook pool on the left side traevling north on Beleverde. Lynn haven and Ashland are one block up from the pool going south on the right side. I suspect based on what has been posted that the sinkhole is located in the village of Beleverde.

As for drains I had all of mine directed under ground and routed out far enough to drain wateraway from the house. I made sure that when backfilled all were backfilled well

Belvedere sinkhole?

Drove thru the area this AM on my way back from Doggie-do-run.
The Ashland retention pond adjacent to Ashland pool which had the initial reported sinkhole, did indeed fill back up with the rains. But today it was nearly empty again! The dirt ring around the original hole seemed to be keeping it from being completely empty.
In addition, on the north side of Belvedere blvd (?), near Pimlico Rec Center, and on what I believe is Pimlico executive course, there are two roped off holes in the course and a large pond on the golf course visible from the street is now empty. I am not talking about holes where one tries to putt their golf ball, but rather what appeared to be moderate sized sinkholes.
I viewed this from my car, and was unable to determine if any homes were involved, even though I drove thru adjacent neighborhoods.
Have seen no other details on this.
