I'm getting ready!!

I just signed up for my first ever golf class...it's a group class meeting once a week for 4 weeks. After that, if I find I am capable at all, I'll sign up for some private lessons. In the meantime, a question...I purchased some practice balls (like wiffles) and have been using them in the back yard with a 9 iron to learn how to NOT hit the ground..it seems to be going pretty good, actually connecting with the ball the majority of times. The problem I am having right now is blisters..on the pads of both thumbs. Once the lessons start (on the 17th) I'm sure the instructor will help me but I'm just wondering if this is common or am I holding the club totally wrong. Steve got me some gloves (would I always need to wear them?) and some really cool shoes :). While at the pro shop I discovered a whole new wardrobe world..another reason to take up golf!! If all works out, we'll be able to actually play when we get there.

just keep your head down and breath

Oh dear you are not holding the club properly. Stop until you have your class and get good instruction rather than getting ingrained in bad habits. You should not have blisters on your thumbs. You only need one glove. Good shoes. Go shopping for great wardrobe. Take more lessons.

Here is something you can do while relaxing

Blisters can be caused for any number of reasons, most common is the club moves in your hands during the swing and rubs. You will often see folks wear holes in their gloves due to this shifting.

Check this video out compared to what you are trying, IMO it is fundementally correct and a great place to start.

Thanks everyone..and aj..I watched the video, can't wait to get out in the yard tomorrow...bandage the blisters, throw on the glove and practice. Somehow I don't think Nancy got her start this way :)

I don't know that much about golf swings, but maybe your hands are too soft. I have 7 large bushes that need removing and some other heavy duty gardening projects you can do for free. That should toughen up those hands!:crap2:

Thanks Jim but Steve already has me trimming trees :). By the way, started my lessons today....didn't realize that holding a stick and turning could be so painful...I am SOOOO out of shape!!!! All the more reason to get to TV and start living!

I'm sure your instructor will advise you on the grip and you "DO" want to hit the ground right after you hit the ball you should be taking a divot.
