Book collections and libraries

We have been donating collections to libraries up north and now started over at Pinellas. After explaining we wanted to donate collections ranging form The Durant Collection of History to a 40 book collection on the Life of Walt Disney and his projects and studio growth. I was told to drop the books at The Friends of Library so that is what I did. We were please to know that the collection could go to good use in growing this new and scant library. I went over again to take the second half of the Disney Collection and the man said "Great, we sold all those yesterday." It turns out, they sold each of the books for $.50. They explained they use the fund to buy new books. Rather dismayed, I took the remaining 20 or so Disney books back home. Does anyone know where we can donate books as a collection?

Check with the Mark Twain Library. They do take some collections; others they give away or donate to The Villages High School. So, be specific and see if they have a spot for them and what they will do with them.

Try the Mark Twain Library in the basement of the Paradise Rec Center. Here is a Villages Daily Sun article about this resource. Mark Twain Library runs on volunteers, donations - The Villages Daily Sun: Villages

Thanks so much. Could kick myself (and those that sold the collections for diddly zip) for not insisting it be used in the library as a collection. You would think when someone says they are donating a collection, someone would say "We just sell the books at $.50 a book and then buy the newest romance novel.

I volunteered at two public libraries in Palm Harbor, FL for three years back in 2000-2003. They were usually very picky about what books they allowed in their collection. In addition, if a book did not circulate out of the collection within a certain amount of time, often they would move it to the book sales they held twice a year.

I donated hundreds of books at Pinellas County, FL libraries and many others of them were rejected because the librarians felt no one would check them out. It costs quite a bit of money to catalog these books and make them ready for people to take out.

Yes, they mentioned that they have to cater to their demographic. That makes some sense but we just thought it was so underwhelming and had hoped to help build it to be a substantial one. It's fine. Thanks for the info on Twain. We will look for a suitable place. Ha. Maybe Orlando at Disney World?

You'd probably do better to sell them online and donate the money.

They are going for $.50 each.:evil6:
