Oversized Garage?
 

I notice some of the new homes indicate they have oversized garages. Can anyone give me an idea how much additional space that may be - on average? We only plan on having one car and a golf cart when we move, but have been planning to buy a designer model that includes a golf cart garage or adding one if the model we select doesn't include one. If the additional space of an oversized garage is significant, it may give us a lot more options. I would appreciate hearing your thoughts. Thanks.

Count'n the days, Hi, When we had our designer built, We had the garage built oversize. It is a Wisteria and the garage was going to be about 20' x 20'. We had it bumped forward and out the side. The measurements came out to 22' x 24'. It is enough room for two cars with two golf cart parked sideways behind them if you had to squeeze them in. I do see any problems with one car and a golfcart in this garage. We looked at adding a golf cart garage when we built but we could not fit it on the lot with this style house. I do not think you will go wrong building it as big as you can with a golf cart garage.

Stretch as much as you can
 

Not sure of the measurements but we stretched our garage as much as our lot would allow. It's a 2 car + cart garage. We wanted a three car but our lot wouldn't accommodate it. It very comfortably fits our SUV, cart and a lot of cabinets. Many people say make your garage as large as you can and I agree. Can never go wrong with more garage space! Another idea for the garage, which I wish we would have thought of when we built, you may want to consider putting in a side door so that you don't have to always lift the garage doors up and down when you want to enter or put away gardening tools. Would have been real handy. Maybe where the window will go you can put in a door instead. Just a thought.

There is simply no such thing as an oversized garage......especially when one has little attic storage and NO basement.

"Oversized garage".......now that is funny......Seriously, additional garage space, if you can do it seems a wise choice in both resale value, quality of life and neighbor envy......

I listened to Frank and others. Built out as far as I could for the lot size. Still not enough! Custom cabinets being ordered to help hide the tools etc.

We bought when it was "Here it is, take or leave it". Our home has an "expanded" garage. It measures about 23'X23' with an 18' door. we have two cars, one full size, and one compact with a golf cart parked behind the compact car. Workbenches along both sides with storage cabinets. I would have preferred a golf cart garage, but the house met all our other criteria, and it works OK for us.

As others have suggested. I would build the garage to fit your needs and if there is room on your lot I would "oversize" it. My salesperson told me that houses with golf cart garages are easier to resale so thats another factor to take into consideration. On an average, I would say that an "oversize" garage is about 80 sq. ft larger----now that is without the golf cart garage.

Buy a house with a golf cart garage and expand it as big as they will let you. If you are use to a basement, you will not regret it.:thumbup:

I think most lots can accomodate the 2 foot stretch forward. I would stretch it front to back and side to side as much as possible. You cannot do it later.

As others have said, make it as big as possible when building. If buying an already built new home or resale with an "oversize" garage, the very basic is 19 X 20. So oversize can be almost anything bigger then that. Take a 25 foot tape measure with you when looking. I have a home with an oversize garage. It held my full size Tundra pickup, a full size car and two golf carts parked behind them. I think it was stretched 2 feet wider and 6 feet longer.
