Is 'Dear" Dead
|
I will stick to "Dear" even in business letters.
In fact, I have to stop and think before signing off "Love, J" |
I find myself (somewhat astonished) using statements like "Thank you, my dear, for what you've done / you're doing on my behalf.
Time was when the term implied a definite and reliable closeness. Today, I'm afraid it connotes a great deal less. That said, you all shoud know that my "loose language" was happily received and acknowledged during my six-night stay at the Bartlett Regional Medical Center in Juneau, Alaska, earlier this month! Dear Steve? You went on an Alaskan cruise and ended up in the hospital? I have told you repeatedly that four martini's is too many. Seriously now. Are you o.k.? Are you back on campus??? I am not likin' this. Worriedly, Gracie |

I received your letter. Your very welcome. Regards, Joe aka 2BNTV |
I once knew someone who started letters with "My dear" (insert name).
Come to think of it, that might be a good way for a woman to start a letter to a man whose name is John. Nobody wants to get a "Dear John" letter. |
