Prius Automotive help - Headlight

My Prius has a headlight that needs replaced, dealer says $440 ---ridiculous! Does anyone know of someone that could replace my light reasonably around The Villages or even Ocala, willing to drive to get it fixed if I don't have to pay so much. I guess the whole front where the lights are housed has to be pulled off so it costs a fortune because of the labor involved.

headlights

Toyota has had a problem with their headlights and recently (this year) sent out a letter extending the warranty on them from three to five years. check with another dealer or call Toyota to find out if you qualify. I had both headlights replaced under the warranty with no cost to me. Cost without warranty would have exceeded $1000.00.

I have used both Tri-County Automotive on 441/27 and Sumter Tire and Auto on 301 in Wildwood and have been impressed with the service at both places. Both are locally run by families whom I would rather patronize than the box stores. I have phone # and addresses if you want them.

Is it the whole headlamp or just the bulb. If the whole headlamp is cracked or damaged I can see it being $440, those assemblies are crazy expensive. But if its just the bulb being burnt out, the repair should be minimal.

To replace the Prius headlite on the passanger side is fairly simple. The driver's side is another issue. The wheelwell trim and the bumper skin (plastic covering) has to be removed. Most of the work changing the actual bulb has to be done by feel. The part cost is less than $10. The failure mode usually has the bulb going out after a few minutes...when it cools off it comes back on...then off again.
I'd recommend a mechanic you trust rather than the dealership doing the job. BTW...if one is failing, you might as well have the other replaced at the same time.
