Kitty with IBS (irritable bowel)--any treatment success stories?
 

My kitty has IBS, irritable bowel syndrome--and needless to say, treatment has so far not been successful; we tried Vet recommended food, Metronidazole, & now steroids--Has anyone had success in treating this?

I know that one of our kitties had something messy and yucky and we switched him to Science Diet(ONLY) for delicate stomachs and it cleared up in about a week to ten days.

Try pumpkin, I know it works with dogs. Not the pie filling, just the canned pumpkin puree, they have it at publix.

My kitty had stomach problems and then the doctor put him on Feline ID Hills Prescription Diet for gastrointestinal health. It is a dry food and you can get it at Pet smart, but you'll need a prescription card. He did great on it with no further problems. Good luck with your kitty.

does you kitty have a flea collar? I got our kitty from the humane society and he came with a flea collar on. He had terrible IBS for the first 2-3 weeks we had him. I took him to the vet twice and nothing worked. My husband was going to have a hip replacement and told me I had to take him back. I decided to take the flea collar off the cat, and low and behold, he got better within a couple of days.

I have used pumpkin several times with two different cats ... with good results. As Patty said, just canned pumpkin, no additives or spices.

A change in drinking water can cause this too, when I travel I always bring my own water. If you're giving tap water you might want to try purified water.

I once had a cat have a reaction to a change in cat litter.

My vet says that cats must not drink the tap water here. Only purified water, such as from the fridge or bottled.

Water and the bowl left to sit can breed bacteria. Be sure to change the water and the bowl daily. I suspect that MAY be the cause of our kitties stomach complaint...

I sometimes wonder about WHAT goes into dry petfood and who controls it and where is it made............

Science diet did the trick for Mikey, but Harry lost weight on it. RedWhich pointed that out when she took care of them. She separated them and fed them different stuff while we were away. She is so good with animals.

This is why I feed people food, even when you think you know, you don't. Even when it's made in the USA it can contain ingredients from places like China.

I have never heard of feeding them pumpkin, but will try it...do you use it in place of regular cat food? or as an addition/supplement? Thanks for the tip!

I add it to the regular food, not a lot, for my dog I'd give maybe a tablespoon or so, you can freeze the leftover in the can. If the cat won't eat it (mine were very picky) I'd put some on their front paw, ****es them off..but they lick it off.

Y'know, pumpkin works for people too.

I've had two very sick cats over the years who wouldn't eat or drink anything. Both times I tried everything. The only thing they would eat is pumpkin which i found amazing. It supplies fluid as well as nutrients.
