What's Going On Here?

Hurrican, earthquake and we are going to get a noreaster on Wednesday, Thursday.

The northeast is suppose to be the safest area in the U.S.

And to think I was concerned about hurricanes when I move to Florida.

Fagetaboutit!!!!!!!!!!

I've been thinking the exact same thing. We woke up 24 degrees in our town this morning which feels a lot more normal for Vermont than the rainy humid weather we've had up until now. Easier to add layers and wool sweaters to get warm than to try to stay cool in a heat wave.

The northeast has been hit a terrible blow for sure. On last evening's news we still were seeing families without heat trying to keep their elderly parents warm. With the new snowstorm and WIND coming, I hope they are spared and it goes out to sea.

However, just playing "Devil's Advocate" here as I can always see the other side of the weather story........

Back when Hurricane Andrew hit Florida, I recall the long long lines in the blazing hot sun and humidity, of people waiting for gallons of drinking WATER.

One of those "Andrew" victims bought one of our Vermont homes a year later in 1994........saying she never wanted to live through that again. Their entire roof blew off........etc., etc. It was a new modern cinder block home. She was traumatized, as her husband told us.

They were original New Yorkers who had retired to Florida in their 50's.

Can you imagine waiting in line under that tropical sun for gasoline?
The people in New Jersey were waiting for up to 8 to 10 hours.

Florida is great when one has central air conditioning......but the opposite of that would be difficult to tolerate.........

Up here we are more conditioned to cooler weather........and to see those in N.Y. / N.J. freezing with the weather in the 50's makes one wonder how we would do in the summer time in Florida with no "air".........it's all relative, but still food for thought.

Of course, the lady who had lost her perfect home in Florida to "Andrew" back in 1993 I assume (?) didn't understand the frost heaves and other issues that happen in Vermont after a winter season. They stayed for ten years in Vermont and then moved to Charleston, South Carolina.

What would most people in THE VILLAGES do if a "perfect storm" hit their area and there was no power or gasoline for weeks.........and their homes were destroyed to the extent of those at the Jersey Shore or on Staten Island, Long Island, New York?????

Would you stay.........or would you drive north.....car or RV (if you couldn't get gasoline).

How dire do you think it would get in THE VILLAGES without electricity or "services" for several weeks in the heat of the summer, or would most of you already be GONE NORTH.
Obviously, a winter storm would be tolerable.....as the weather is great.

Once I questioned if we could have a generator and never actually got a definitive answer. Could one have a full house generator in TV? I think I was told they could not be "outdoors" or visible.
Again, we all know now that even generators are not a perfect backup system if you can't buy gasoline. Plus, I would think it is NOT SAFE to store gasoline in the garage in the heat of summer.

IT'S JUST A LOT TO PONDER......BEFORE MAKING A MOVE.

But yes, Florida has been spared major hurricanes while the Northeast has been getting hit the past few years.....just as Vermont suffered during last year's Hurricane IRENE...........

Even for those of us who no longer live in the New York / New Jersey area.......we have sons, etc. and friends who must travel and fly to those areas on business , frequently.
All businesses have been impacted. Lots of "small stories within the larger story".........due to "sandy".

Thanks in advance for any thoughts on what you would do if a major hurricane hit central Florida..........
