a post from another thread made me do a search for the meaning of the phrase 'boy howdy' since it is a phrase that is sometimes used here on totv.

none of the sites i checked indicated that is an unkind phrase; though a couple explanations did indicate that it could be used sarcastically.

the majority of the sites came closest to the explanations found at these two sites:

My sainted Grandmother used it and she was born in a rural area of Illinois.

She used it as an exclamation of surprise, bewilderment and when other words would be too much.

I never heard her use strong language. Sometimes I do. I feel a strong word coming on.

I have only one thing to say about this thread: Boy Howdy.

The first time I heard the term, "boy howdy" was on The Big Valley. Heath Barkley said it as an expression similiar to "oh my gosh."

I just looked it up. It actually is a term of exclamation, such as "wow"....
Only place I've ever seen it used was on TOTV....
Every region of our country seems to have their own local jargon.
It does sound kind of "western" or "cowboyish". Thanks for explaining.
