Les Miserables - reviews?

Saw Les Mis on Christmas, first showing. Fabulous. Saw the live musical in 3 different cities incl London and always is tops.
HAD to see the movie as the music is so memorable and dramatic. Not disappointed in the least. Jackman and Hathaway performance is breathtaking and will win Awards. The Direction and filming is spellbinding. Movie is over 2 1/2 hours but feels much less. The closeups and live singing of all songs impacted the experience. Music is heartwrenching. I must say (I'm a 64 yo guy). I wept the last 10 minutes - and I KNOW how it ends...
If you enjoy music and great performances this is for you. I'm going again.

Nice to hear that you liked it. It's box office opening was quite good on Christmas.

We saw Les Mis yesterday, and don't anybody kill me for saying this, I know it was a musical, but I got irritated that the entire movie is done in song. I expected a musical like the old days, some conversation then a scene where everyone broke out in a song. I did not expect every word of the movie to be done in singing. It's a great story and done well, but.....JMHO please.

Completely understand - It was a decision the Director/Producers made before production. So, it's more like an Operetta. If I never saw the stage Musical or knew the story - that would have put me off - and many guys. But compared to the Theatre productions, the movie's script/dialogue in song is much easier to understand.
Perhaps best that moviegoers know the operetta style going in (esp the guys...)

But (guys...) if you can past the singing - it's a great movie. Lots of action, great cinematography, wonderful acting, and the songs/music fantastic. Of interest - the actors do not lip sync pre-recorded studio music. In every song they actually are singing live while acting and the orchestra then recorded the music to match their singing later. From what I see this is a first in a major film. Ann Hathaway, although only in a total of 18 minutes of the movie is breathtaking, and a solid favorite for Best Supporting actress. She lost 25 lbs and cut her hair very short for the part - same with Hugh Jackman for his leading part. Believe me - seeing this movie is well worth the ticket price and your time. And the story has such wonderful messages - redemption etc.

I did not know that is was all done in an operatta style. Thanks for the heads up.

Just saw the Les Miz film at the Rialto and it was wonderful. Have seen the stage musical several times but for some reason, the film version was so much easier to understand. At the end of the film, the audience joined in a rousing ovation. How many times have you seen that happen at a movie theater?

Took my 78-year-old neighbor who has never seen the production. She loved it and is right now listening to the Les Miserables CD I just loaned to her. Go see the movie...you won't be disappointed!

I too would have like some dialog . . . and too many of the songs were just too long . . . a 2 1/2 movie that could have been done in 1 3/4 . . . thought it was a 7.5 out of 10.

Loved loved loved the live show which was made without any dialog...only music. Spell bounding. The music was great. Also loved the movie....but sad to say, did not like Anne Hathaway...she was a little too dramatic and didn't care for her singing...which was mostly sobbing. So, I was happy that she was only in it for 17 minutes. Huge Jackman was great and I think Russell Crowe did an outstanding job...espcially since he isn't a singer and had to take voice lessons for 4 months before making the movie. But the real star was Eddie Redmayne, who played Marius, Colette's boyfriend....I thought he was wonderful and stole the show!

Really enjoyed it, 8 out of 10 stars.

Found this movie very entertaining. It had very good action scenes, cinematography, acting, and most of the singing was quite good. There were a few bad notes here and there but a wonderful movie experience. Quite depressing at times but very uplifting at others.

Very crowded theater at this afternoon's showing at the Old Mill Playhouse.

I loved the movie and can't wait to see it again. Having seen both the old and revised versions multiple times on stage, I was prepared for the lack of dialogue. Hugh jackman was fantastic. Eddie Redmayne was a very pleasant surprise and he was a terrific Marius. The entire film was stunning!

Jean Valjean's Prisoner # 24601. Hugh Jackman did a really good job.

Les mix

Saw this twice in theater and it was my favorite all time play. Also my favorite story. Was very disappointed ,Hugh ok but was not Jean Val Jean, too skinny. Anne was horrible and can't sing Colette dull and the best ,Eponine was great but I didn't like how they did it in close up, Crowe passable but his singing barely Would have loved to see this with singers and depth of character

I agree with you 100%...thought Ann Hathaway was way too dramatic and not believable and her singing amounted to sobbing. The rest of the movie was fabulous...the best one I've ever seen. Eddie Redmayne, stole the show. Huge Jackman & Russell Crowe were outstanding. I saw the the original stage play in London, and it was also without any dialog, only music. The movie is equally as good, although it is always better to see something in person.
