Leaking Garbage Disposal

Lo and behold, the PLASTIC original equipment garbage disposal in our less than 9 year old home just started leaking like crazy this evening. We were NOT using the GD when the leak was discovered and we have seldom used it since we bought our house. Has anyone else experienced this? Secondly - can anyone give me an aprox. cost to have the darn thing replaced (prior to calling in a professional)? Any info./insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Lot of good info here:
The Average Life of a Garbage Disposal | eHow.com

Home Depot has them from $65 to $200.
Search Results for*garbage disposal*at The Home Depot

Probably $100 to $175 to have someone install one.
I replaced mine after 6 years myself
Biggest thing damaging a disposal...........pouring very hot water in the sink, destroys the seals. Even says that in the owners manual

Really, 9 years is about the life of a disposal. Most are made of steel and rust through on the bottom. New disposals vary quite a lot in price but I would recommentdwhatever you do, you replace the original with one made of stainless steel. It will last many years longer than a standard steel disposal.

Garbage disposal

I just replaced ours myself. A low end at lowes is about $100.
The high one was $180., as I said I replaced it myself.
I don't know what someone would charge to install it.

Took me about 2 hours.

Hope this helps !

we just had ours replaced in June by Mike Scott Plumbing. Total cost $200 which included the new unit.

Remove it?

If you got 9 years out of a "builder grade" disposal, you did good. They are pretty easy to replace. If you do not use it, consider removing it and adding the strainer & "tail" piece to the sink and hook up to the drain.

Most garbage disposals don't last 9 years...you did very well. and call a plumber!

Based on several recommendations I got Mike Scott Plumbing to replace the defective unit. They have a flat rate of $ 200 for this service. There was a bit of a SNAFU regarding the appointment, but smooth sailing once they arrived. I also found out that they do NOT charge a premium for weekends and after hours which is a serious future consideration.

Did that include the unit?

Emery Dillard of Dillard Plumbing is wonderful. He bought and replaced our disposal a month ago. We have had him for over 3 years, very reasonable and very dependable. His phone is 352-267-2084. Tell him Mike and Nancy Buchanan referred you.
