Computer new to mac
 

My husband and attended our first meeting with this club today and we were a little disappointed. This club I thought was directed to people that never used macs and would discuss the workings of the computer. We had a PC and our son bought us a Mac mini for Christmas. And we are fairly clueless on how to use it. In the rec news it said it was a meeting on basics especially those who are shifting from a PC. Did we go to the wrong meeting? Started off to a good start explaining the address book but then the discussions went to the I pad and I phone and using a system for pictures. We left thinking we waisted $10.00. Is there some place that we could go to get some hands on classes. Thanks::shrug:

Sorry you had such a bad experience. These types of classes the club conducts, have a hard time staying on topic. Many folks come for the wrong reasons and dominate the discussion. It's unlikely that these meetings will help you much.

The Mac is very easy to use and you only need to know a few basics to get going.

The other alternative is to make an appointment at the Apple Store and one of their Geniuses will give you a one-on-one session; albeit, you have to pay for that.

We would like to know what word processor we have so my husband can make business cards and was wondering about the keyboard short cuts.

if all you are wanting is bussiness cards,,, go to staples,, they will have them done in 20 mins,,, now for the mac meeting,, i have attended them,,, YOU ARE ON TARGET!!! the guy named Jim is a gem at the meetings,, he does a great job,,, there are 2 gals that wander all over the place and havent a clue as to how to run a meeting,, get in touch with Jim,, he will be most happy to help any way he can,,, since you are member you will have acesss to the special pages on the newsletters,, look him up, give him a call..... I always think back to my college days of the Profs that belived there lives were so important to us! Jim is there to help you!!

Many of the keyboard shortcuts are the same as Windows. For instance, command+C is copy and command+V is paste. command+P is print, etc...

To determine if you have a word processor, click in the icon that looks like a rocket in the dock. You'll be looking for a program called Pages.

I have a macbook air, and installed Open Office, a freeware productivity suite very similiar to Microsoft Office. You don't have to install all the modules. I have the Text, Spreadsheet and Data portions loaded. You can find it at Apache OpenOffice for MacOS X

Once you get used to it, you'll love your new mac!

I have found the Mac User Group meetings to be very helpful and the volunteers that run the meetings to be very nice people who do a wonderful job. If you look at Guides that help you learn to use a Mac - Switch To A Mac Guides you will find a lot of useful information that will help you switch over from Windows to Mac OS X.
