lanai, enclosed lanai, florida room???

Our lanai started out with the former owners as a screen room aka lanai. They enclosed it which I guess made it an enclosed lanai. Now we have taken down all the siding and had drywall installed and will shortly have heat and a/c out there does it now become a Florida room???

And on this subject anyone with a Bougenvilla ever had an additional duct run out to the lanai. If so who did you use and what was the ball park cost?
I know someone needs to do the caluculation as to whether or not the system can handle the additional sq. ftg. I am assuming it can and wondering what the cost might be. Please don't beat me up!!!

I can't answer your question but I can identify with your plea not to be "beat up"! TOTV has been a wonderful source of information in the past but lately I think twice and sometimes more about whether to post! Seems like some people just delight in flaming on here! Thank goodness most are helpful and I'm sure you'll get your answers. chilout

You are correct that to condition this room properly calculations should be done. I suggest that you contact your A/C contractor, the company who does your yearly service on your A/C, and speak to them. The calculation you are talking about is called a "Manual J". It is a complex calculation that takes awhile, as it factors in the amount of windows and insulation you have, etc.

Many companies will charge you at least $100 to do this, but you need to know if your current A/C can handle this additional load.

Understand that every home is different, as a lot depends of what direction the house faces, type of windows, even how much shade you have from trees, etc.

Another option you have is to consider a second smaller ductless split A/C system for your lanai. There are many advantages to these units. They are very high efficiency, can be run with a remote control and provide both heat and A/C. I would strongly consider one of these as an option. Hope this info helps!
