Treatment at the Moffitt Center
 

I'm seeking information and opinions from anyone who has completed or is currently receiving cancer treatment from the Moffitt Center here in The Villages.

I'd appreciate hearing about your experiences here or by private message.

Is there such a thing ...
 

... as "cancer treatment at TV's Moffitt Center"? What do they do there? When I dealt with a cancer scare and needed exams, diagnostic work, and genetic counseling, there was not a single thing that could be done here in TV; I had to go to Tampa for everything, even drawing blood! What was the point of all the hype about TV's Moffitt Center?

must have something to do with your type of cancer or your physicians preference. My wife had breast cancer prior to the Moffit existence. Every need for the varying specialtied (and there are many) was available without leaving TV or nearby (Intercommunity Cancer Center behind Home Depot on Rolling Avres). Including some advanced radiation techniqes not available in many places (back then).

God forbid, if ever needed again for either of us, we would not go to Moffit, but return to those who did such a spectacular, comprehensive care and complete removal of my wife's cancer.

I think there has been a dis-service to the non Moffit cancer treatment providers in our area ever since the advent of TV promoting Moffit, which in my opinion was/is self serving to the developers marketing profile.

To each his own on such a personal issue as the big 'C'.....but there is a lot of specialty in the area.....that now happens to include Moffit.

So this is why I asked the original question and what has happened since:

I got my very grim diagnosis on February 4th up north and arrived here on the evening of the 5th. On the 6th I met with the nurse navigator at Moffitt. By 3:00 pm the next day I had done all of my pre-treatment testing except a Friday PET scan, including a full consult with a fabulous oncologist. Everything was ready for my first treatment on Tuesday the 12th and it went very well. I have never been treated so well and so professionally anytime, anywhere.

The testing and diagnosis took over a month at a prestigious cancer center back home, and I wasn't really displeased with that, but the Moffitt Center tops anything I could have imagined.

I feel indebted to Mr Morse's vision and determination to spend money and twist arms to bring this resource to us. I don't care who might not agree with things he's done. Moffitt is monumental.

BTW - my oncologist's latest stats are that there is a population numbering 93,000 here now. The national average is that 15% of the population has cancer, that is from is stage 1 prostate cancer to all stage 4 types, and non- malynoma skin cancers aren't even counted. The Florida average is 20%. The Villages average is 40%!!

So what we need is as many Moffitts as McDonalds.

So glad to hear you have a medical team and plan you can have confidence in and it was done expeditiously.

Knowing there is more incidence of cancer with age, it's probably the concentration of people here over age 55 and the average age here that yields the 40% average here that you quoted.

Of course it's the age thing here for that unbelievable 40 % figure. Many cancers defy early diagnosis and start years before they finally manifest themselves when we become Villagers. The main Moffitt Center in Tampa is dealing with the Florida average of 20%. The reality of that means they admit an average of over 200 NEW patients EACH WEEK.

Dr. Hussein at Sharon Morse (MOffit) is good. I think he's part of the Florida Cancer Specialists in that building. When it comes to oncologists its going to come down to your trust and relationship with them. If one doesn't work for you move on and quickly. Getting the best treatment is the main goal. But yes they are always busy in his office ;)

As a chemotherapy infusion nurse, who will be seeking employment in TV someday, I'm very happy to hear this. Surely they have a job for me, and I much prefer to belong to a top notch crew!

don't forget the non Moffits that are top notch as well.

It is also interesting to note that oncologists who once upon a time who were part of the non Moffit cancer providers who now get to engrave "Moffit" on their cards get an honorable mention.

The disadvantage of the non Moffit providers is they do not present themselves as a "unified" provider like Moffit or Inter Community Cancer Centers.....and yes it requires that one must do some work to find the best.

For me, I do not conclude the best are an automatic conclusion just because of the flag ship they may be under. The individual providers credentials and reputation are utmost to me.......not the flag ship noteriety or momentum or promotion.
