Learned something new today

Our new Grandson is just over 3 months old and started day care 2 weeks ago. They are teaching him to sign. He now knows how to sign momma and daddy and is learning a few others like wet diaper, hungry, but doesn't have them down yet. Some 6 and 9 month old there can use 15 to 20 signs. Simply amazing. Did any one else know kids this young could learn to sign before learning to talk?

No and that's amazing. We all know a baby's defense mechanism is to just cry.

Thanks for posting this.

That is fascinating - that early they make the connection between a thing and its name.
WOW - remember that is when Helen Keller's whole world opened up - when she finally made that connection.

Yes, teaching signing is pretty prevalent in high quality day care places today. Someone mentioned autistic kids, it's aslo used with Down's Syndrome kids as they are learning to speak clearly. Our grandson lives in a city with many Chinese and therefore he's learning some mandarin in Daycare. It's so funny to hear him sing Happy Birthday in Chinese. It's all good I think.

Yes, it is amazing. Google "baby signs" and you will find this is a method to teach babies how to communicate before their verbal skills are developed. This method applies to hearing children as well as to special needs children.

BTW, I'm a retired teacher of the Deaf, 34 years, and 10 years teaching sign language at the university level. I was an only child of Deaf parents and sign language was my first language!

That is amazing! I wonder why we are able to teach babies to "sign", but we end up with teens that can't read and write?
