New CYV - Phone wiring and phone outlets

We just purchased a new Court Yard Villa in Sanibel and have a question about telephone wiring.

For those of you who don't use a "land line" and rely on just your cell phone, what did you do with the outlets and wiring that is installed in your home?

What ingenious ways have you used this wiring for some other purpose?

Ethernet cable conversion somehow? Video? Sound?

Please share your ideas....

Thanks,
Gordy

Anyone?

Gordy - we just moved in to a CYV in Sanibel and we will also rely solely on cell service. I plan to continue to use those outlets for phone service though! I believe there is a telephone set from V-Tech which comes with a cell cradle. You place the "landline" handsets in whatever rooms you choose and place your cell in the cradle. It's my understanding that you can receive and place calls from any of the hand sets - and they ring when a call comes in! I tend to leave my phone on the counter or in the bedroom and often do not hear it ring.

Ooma phone and V-Tech

Easy to attach Ooma to your network and V-Tech to Ooma. That frees up your Cat 5 wires to use for house network. We haven't done it yet, but plan to in the future.

mherzberg & FLSun,

I would welcome any more info on your projects..... as you do them.

I had thought about converting the existing lines over to Ethernet but have not looked at the cabling closely....

Ethernet

I converted my phone wiring to ethernet and put a switch in the low voltage box in the garage. Then discovered it is way too hot in there for equipment so moved everything into the master closet all the way in the back on a high shelf. Much better. Also moved the comcast internet into the same place. All is good...

wire is CAT5E so good for gigabit speed. Works great.

nysnowbirds,

I would love to take a look at what you have done. By chance could I get some pictures or stop by sometime?

Thanks,
Gordy

The wire is CAT 5e. However the jacks are not and need to be upgraded for Ethernet.
