Ladies, has anyone figured this out?

I am a 66 year old grandma, and I have that definite round grandma look.
It doesn't bother me that much...it is what it is. However, it would be nice
to lose 20 pounds, and that is my goal while we are here for the winter. So, I have been going to fabulous exercise classes 5 days a week...Total Fitness,
Body Basics, Zumba Gold, and Walk Off The Pounds. I feel I give it my best when I'm there. I wear a pedometer and get about 10,000 steps a day or even more. I have adjusted my eating a lot this week and as much as possible otherwise. I have started eating a little something in the morning
since I do know my body was probably going into starvation mode from not
eating from dinner until noon. STILL, the number on the scale does not change! I am frustrated. Again, I generally don't worry about it much, but all the effort should show SOME results. Does anyone know of anything that might help?

Don't pay attention to the scale - the way your clothes fit is a much better way to measure your success. I am currently reading the Metabolism Miracle and hoping it will help with that middle aged spread. It's not really calories in, calories out. It's more about how your body processess the dreaded carbohydrates. Good luck on your journey.

You are so kind. This has all become so complex.

Heartnsoul 03-07-2013 07:20 PM

yes it not ONLY takes exercise but unfortunately giving up all the bad foods and that means the carbs!! When you do both, the pounds will melt away. It's a constant battle but you feel so much better when you lose Good luck

Everyone's metabolism is different. Some will lose quickly, and some will not. I'm one of the latter category. In 2006 I gained 20 lbs as a direct result of Tamoxifen. It does not want to budge. In January I gave up all starch and sugar. In 10 weeks I have only lost 5 lbs. I've decided to be fine with that very slow rate.

Keep trying, and try different eating regimens. Not everything works for everybody, including the popular scientific thinking on weight loss. Our bodies all process differently. Some are luckier than others. Good luck! If nothing else, you are doing your heart a wealth of good with your exercise routine.

I am starting to see some things I am doing wrong. One example, I have been eating
a fair number of plain sweet potatoes...nuked and just pepper on them. Low in calories...high in carbs. Giving up most high carb foods is difficult. I'm half Italian, and you can put ANYTHING on pasta, and I love it. I am going to give it a try though.

And my dear Judith. If you are losing weight for your health that is wonderful but sometimes that danged tummy stuff stays where it is even if we lose weight....it is just our age and stage in life. Wear it proudly if it won't budge. We are the champions, us grown up girls.

It is what we are inside that counts.

Judith Ann 03-07-2013 08:37 PM

This is big! I got an answer from Gracie! How cool is that?

Your answer brought tears to my eyes!

I have said just recently, when talking to a friend, that we are at an age
when we can truly judge each other by what is on the inside. That being said, we(I) can still be so hard on ourselves. Now that being said, I love being this age. Children are grown and settled...grandkids are a joy...career goals have been accomplished...my sweetie loves me just the way I am....so much to be thankful for. Maybe what I needed most was a little tweaking in my thinking. Thanks Gracie!

P.S. I'm still going to TRY to control the carbs.

I'm not sure how y'all give us those direct links....last time I tried I was told that it was not allowed. So, you will have to google it or give up the secret to those great links which are soo helpful. Thanks,

My doc had me keep a food diary and make adjustments eat alot of little high protien meals and I still didn't loose weight. I was one of those had to eat high calorie milk shakes to keep my weight up untill I hit the change. As soon as the natural homones went on came the weight. He said if I don't want to be on hormone therapy drugs I will have to live with it and work out two hours a day. Like that is going to happen. So I have resigned myself to looking like my mother who was also very thin until she hit 50, and then looked like a butter ball. I didn't even keep it off when I was managing a store and on my feet 10 to 12 hours a day.

Thankfully I have a hubby who loves me anyway.

Losing weight

A little over a year ago I was saying the same thing - I want to lose 20 lbs. But counting calories never worked for me for very long (5 lbs max). Check out Beyond Diet I followed most of the eating plan, lost the 20 lbs, and have kept most of it off. I also believe that everyone is not the same. My husband has used a "no carbs" plan before, but I cannot live without carbs. BeyondDiet teaches you how to eat proper, balanced meals for YOU, while eating healthy food. Weight Watchers is another good plan, as you get the needed support to continue a weight loss regime. We're not 20 years old anymore, but we can still have a healthy weight and feel good about how we look. Good luck to you.

#1. Eat a nutritional breakfast

#2. eat small meals 5 x daily to keep your metabolism moving

#3. you may be gaining temporary muscle weight from all the exercise-it will help you lose when it levels off

#4. there are many meetings to choose from at the Weight Watchers center at Spanish Springs-give it a try! It works if you work it!

Many of us are in the sames boat as you are.

Before I lost weight I went to my doctor and found out my thyroid was not working properly, and my hormones were out of balance. Along with the thyroid and hormone issues being resolved I didn't just depend on that. I do a pretty intense cardio exercise 30- 40 min a day/ 5 days a week, do weight training 3 times a week, and I did lose the weight! It became a lifestyle change in my food and activity level and I have kept my weight down for 6 years now, no more yo-yo weight fluctuations. I did hire a personal trainer for 4 weeks who helped with a food and exercise plan but there is plenty of information that is free too. I do "cheat" but really watch quantities and don't make it a daily habit of indulging. I feel 100 times better, this is what worked for me.
