Mystery beeping from our microwave

For the past four seasons we are here in our home in TV, our microwave beeps for no apparent reason. This happens very infrequently...I'd say about every two weeks. It happens at different times of the day. The beeping lasts for about 5 seconds and it beeps usually three times.

I have checked to see if any timers are set and they are not. I don't know what causes this beeping and it is a mystery to hubby and me. We have the original builder's model of GE microwave that was installed in the patio villas 5 years ago. Anyone know what could be causing this mysterious beeping?

Does it display any kind of error code with the beeps?

Bill :)

The beep may be an error code. Watch the screen for any output data. :22yikes:
If you see a code flashing, write it down and call GE so they can look up the Code for exact trouble shooting.
You could also try a "Reboot", like on your computer. Unplug the unit for about 5-10 minutes and plug it back in. This might clear any errors.
A dirty or stuck keypad could also cause problems, but I think that would be more than intermittent.

Funny how sound travels and can fool you.

There has been a recent ad on the television that sounds like the smoke detector going off.

The dishwasher beeps three times when it is finished and sometimes that sounds like it is coming from a different direction.

We all have a lot of electronic stuff in our homes, and many of those gadgets beep for one reason or another.

Assuming the beeping will cause an error code, you can always Google the error code with your brand and model number and see if there is a solution.

One reason could be a burned out part in the keypad.

Maybe your popcorn is ready.

We had a beeping in our kitchen, thought it was the microwave....discovered it was the dishwasher at the end of the dry cycle.

I had the same thing happen..it would go off at all hours, beep beep beep..no error code, then would go on as if someone had put something in to cook. The beeping was driving me crazy..why? what the heck was going on with this stupid thing? It got to the point where I just would unplug it and plug in only to use it. One night I left it plugged in and it went off about 3 am so I went out and looked at the screen and it appeared to have a smiley face on where the numbers were..some were lit some not and I swear it looked like an evil smiley face...Well I chucked that thing in the nearest dump...have no idea what it was up to but obviously no good lol. :) watch for the smiley..when that happens..get rid of it lol! it may be a clone Mooooooohahahaaa :/

Do you have a "smart meter" on the exterior of your home ?????

In Vermont they snuck them in on all of us last year......metermen no longer have to go around and read the electrical meters.

However, since it was installed...........we do hear a weird SOUND which is difficult to describe coming from the microwave, the wall oven......both GE appliances and in all rooms of the house. Ditto for the GE frig which is the French door variety.......it's not the chirping of the ice maker "filter".....totally different sound.
I also hear it "in the walls" in the kitchen.............as strange as that may sound.

At first I thought it was our hot water baseboard heat.....but last summer the heat was not on.

Many people oppose these smart meters...........

Not saying our "sound" is the same as yours........but who knows?

I really don't know. I've never looked. I'll certainly look next time it happens.

We are seasonal so the microwave electricity is turned off once a year when we leave for the season. That's a reboot, isn't it?

As others have also said, the beeping could be from another appliance. I'll take note next time I run off the dishwasher.

Would the error code remain on the display if I don't reset it? Seems to me, the microwave always displays the current time when it is not in use.
