Birds Hitting Windows?

Our neighbors are having birds flying into their windows, not realizing its glass? Not sure if its because they see a reflection of themselves, or reflection of trees or bushes? Anyone have idea why they do that?:shrug:

Reflective film seems to add to that problem in our neighbors case anyway.

I have a cardinal that has beat himself to near death by attacking the side mirror on my truck and also the house in general. This goes on the entire day. I assume he sees an intruder in his territory. This has gone on since Feb 1. I had the same thing up north with robins.
Up north I have birds that have flown into our sliding glass doors. About half the time they break their necks. I think they "see" a flyway but don't see the glass.

I am pretty sure it is their reflection they see.

Yes , we had the same exact weird experience last spring with robins.

Atrium doors, front bay window, back bay window......just attacking the glass constantly...........there was nothing they wouldn't attack if it was glass.

They finally knocked themselves out...........but while it was happening, it truly was like an attack from Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds"..........

The same year, we had another family of birds, one of which had built a nest in the overhang above our deck.............at first we wondered where all the "straw" and junk was coming from on the open part of our deck.

This continued on for awhile. We'd blow it off , only to have the debris return.............finally, I saw the father bird bringing more straw or building materials to the nest area...........with all the trees around, they had to build it so close to the house, under the roof eaves.......eventually, they "moved".........

Didn't like their neighbors I guess (us).

Just wondering if the two for one drinks during Happy Hour have anything to do with that :)

I don't know but we have had several instances where birds fly into the glass window at my office. Unfortunately, in several cases, it resulted in their death. :(

Ours were very persistant.........and noisy. It took them a week to kill themelves.....they were literally dive bombing into our glass windows and doors. Never had seen anything like it before.

Maybe a plastic owl on the roof would keep them away.

If you google it, there are several solutions recommended.
Put a curtain in the window to minimize the glare and reflection.
Put a wind chime or plants near the window.
Put some of those decorative decals on the glass.
If you have bird feeders, move them farther away from the window.

We had a similar problem when we had film put on our lanai glass. The sky is reflected and they think it's open space and bam, they fly into the window. Cardinals are especially aggressive when they have a nest nearby. My neighbor found decals on line Buy Window Decals, Butterfly Decal And Maple Leaf Decal At Windowalert which she placed on the windows and it worked (see interesting reason why it works). I had some of the film left over and cut it into long strips and hung it from the gutters. It wasn't unsightly and it did the job. Birds are wary of anything waving in their field of vision (hawks) and will avoid the window.

In Germany, windows have decals of large birds of prey with wings extended. I still think that they do not know it is a window, so they fly like it is open space, the attack birds scare them off.

We had the same problem when we lived in TX. It was only one window in our master bath. The poor cardinal woke us up every morning. We put up a solar screen. It was a west facing window and it cut down on the late day sun coming in as well as stopped the reflection problem. I am not sure if solar screens are allowed in The Villages but it worked well for us.
