Gratuities for Interstate Movers

Well the moving truck is coming next week--we selected Suddath United Van Lines, very impressed by their professionalism at least so far!
My question-- how do we handle the gratuities? What amount (%) is appropriate for a NYC to FL move? Are there different crews? Should you tip both at pick-up and delivery? Would appreciate any advice that you may have.

Have you used movers before? We have moved a gazillion times down through the years and have never heard of tipping the movers. Usually what we do is lay in a lot of cold Mountain Dews (seems to be the drink of choice) and some subs. They might drink some of the pop (soda to you!) while loading/unloading and take the subs with them. It always seems to be greatly appreciated. We might send them off with a stealth case of beer. (I will deny saying that...):censored:

I agree absolutely.

I moved from LI NY last nov. We had three guys load and unload the truck . We gave them $50 each. They way I look at it is they are humping heavy boxes and furniture , a very hard job. The tip in the overall cost of moving is really not much.

We tip the loaders individually, to make sure they get it. I agree with Tommy Steam, they work HARD, so if they do a good careful job, we take care of them.

I always tip movers, and I make it a point to tell them at the very first that if things go well, there will be a tip for everyone. Just sets a nice tone for the move. :-)

We have moved many times and have always made it a practice to tip the movers as well as provide subs/pizza, plenty of water and gatorade. The lead driver is usually $100 and $50 per man. We have found it to be money well spent.

I agree, I gave them all the water they could drink and coffee and dessert too. When I moved here from Los Angeles, I tipped the lead driver at that time and his helpers and when we arrived in TV, I tipped the driver again and the local helpers that helped him unpack the truck. Agree, money well spent. Everything arrived in great shape, nothing broken and nothing missing.

We always tip the movers. Unheard of not to tip in NJ. They are not paid all that well and work so very hard. We tipped the crew in NJ and then again in Florida when they delivered to TV (not all the same crew). Yes it was expensive. $200 at each end. Just part of moving.

Thanks! I guess it may be a regional thing, but in NYC I am used to tipping for everything! Thus afternoon I asked the moving company and they said "it is not required but they do appreciate it. Some people buy them lunch some give them $20 a person on each end." The suggestion about having plenty of cold drinks on hand is appreciated--I need to get to the market this weekend!

I guess maybe it's a regional thing. From Pittsburgh to NJ and back, then to MI... tips were not even thought about.

We moved down here from two places, MI condo and Pittsburgh apartment. Our movers from MI to FL trashed the molding on one side of the sliders going out of the walk-out level. The mover said it would come out of his salary to fix it, and Ron said don't worry about it. Why, I don't know. Arrrrrrrrgh! Now we're putting the condo up for sale and have to fix it. So that was that mover's tip.

Then the Pittsburgh movers who took our apartment stuff to FL... they obviously slammed on the brakes somewhere on their trip down from Pgh. to FL. Every single plate was chipped (packed by us in approved dish-pack cartons but not covered by moving co.), broke the kickstand of a bicycle, arrived a week late, and everything was freezing cold. They had obviously parked our stuff in the truck:bowdown: somewhere till they got another load, then drove down in bad weather, slamming on the brakes and shifting the load.

All this for over 4K. We were not inclined to tip.

We've moved six times. This was not atypical service.
