Ryndamm Ship / Holland America

Looking for some feedback regarding this ship if anyone has sailed on her. We are looking into a 14 nite cruise out of Tampa early Dec and we really love the itinerary & ports. We are a little concerned about the ship as it is only 55,000 tonnage and it is an older ship altho refurbished in 2012. Appreciate your opinions. BTW, I may have misspelled the ship name but I think you get my drift...no pun intended

My husband and I cruised to Alaska with Holland America and the ship was called the Veendam, and it was wonderful! Firs class all the way and I think that is what Holland America is like! Enjoy!

We are fans of Holland-America. We took a Mediterranean cruise last fall on the Ryndam. It's a beautiful luxurious ship. We had a room with a balcony, bathtub and granite countertops. The staff was top-notch, food was excellent, standard casino and OK entertainment. There aren't a lot of bells and whistles like rock climbing and skating rinks. But they seemed to offer enough on-board activities to satisfy most passengers.

We went in 2008 to Alaska in the Ryndam, our 1st cruise ever, and loved it.
Yes it is older( but seems it was remodeled after our trip) but it was clean and well kept
The staff was attentive
It had washers and dryers for doing your own laundry.
One night they served me a halibut which i did not like, and the staff in the formal dining rm went out of their way to make sure that 1. i liked the other fish and 2. That my consecutive dinners were exceptional.

Loved that cruise

Very good ship. The problem is what I like you might not. Would help if you added some of your likes, dislikes or concerns. If you have gone on other HA ships you should find this one to be similar.

Sailed on the Ryndam for a week in early March. She looks very good and has some improvements over my first trip on her almost ten years ago.

Her dancers/singers were especially good this sailing. Food was superb; staff was, expectedly, friendly - they make it more of a point than on some lines to learn your name and your preferences on the first night!

The only objection many in my small group (30) had was that the dining room was close to FRIGID!

Her size is, in many ways, a definite plus! With only jsut over 1,900 guests, you won't find yourself waiting to get off or on, and crowds in the public areas are manageable!

We cruised on her sister ship the Maasdam. One of the best cruises we have experienced, and we have taken our share. It is a smaller ship, but their food was by far the best cruise food we have experienced. It was refurbished and I felt very well done. The Holland America staff excellent!

Ryndam

We have been on the Ryndam three times. It is smaller and easier to get on and off. The service is excellent. We have also been on other Holland America ships. WE have cruised numerous times on different lines and now will only do HAL.

I'm not an experienced cruiser, but my impression is that Holland America is a cut above other cruise lines except for the "elite" cruise lines that are out of my price range.

Not a fan

Sorry to be the debbie downer here but we took a cruise on the Zuiderdam and it was dreadful. The ship was old and there was nothing to do. We were very board and felt that we wasted our money. Our travel agent recommended this cruise line because he said it was a very nice, upscale cruise line. When we got home we informed him that we felt differently. We had been cruising Carnival but that too has changed. Why would you want to travel on an old ship when you can travel in style on one of the newer ships from a different cruise line? Pick a smaller ship from another cruise line and enjoy. The newer ships are so bright and colorful....the Holland America line...dark and dreary.

We felt that Holland America offered an upscale experience. We would not consider Carnival. We enjoyed our HA experience. Each to their own.

Thank you to all who posted. Seems like most of you erased my concerns regarding size & age of ship. Like I stated in my post, we really like the itinerary and the 14 nite aspect. We have done 19 cruises on various lines but never HA. Food & service seems to be exceptional which is a big plus. Will also be checking out cruisecritic.com

We usually sail on Royal Caribbean, but about 18 months ago took a 14 day Ryndam cruise. It was very enjoyable except for one thing. The evening dining room service was teribble. We had to wait soooo long for everything. For that reason only we are reluctant to travel HA. Perhaps, it is wrong for me to judge based only on one cruise.
