Which newspapers do you recall your parents reading?
 

The Boston Globe
Although we loved getting THE VILLAGES DAILY SUN newspaper at our front door, this is our favorite of all time newspaper.

I especially like the Sunday edition........but it’s always a good read. Most especially today. CLICK ABOVE HYPERLINK for dramatic photos.

We always would get all of the major east coast big city newspapers and read them after church on Sundays.......while having a leisurely brunch....when our kids were still at home.

What newspapers do you recall your parents reading?

My husband and I grew up with The Columbus Dispatch, and then for forty years had the Cincinnati Enquirer and between the two read the Indianapolis Times for a few years.

They all had the same editorial/political slant as The Daily Sun.

It is all in what you are used to as far as political slant.

All major papers have the same sources for national news such as Associated Press, Reuters, and..I can't think of the third one.

Now print journalism is not anywhere near the first source for most of us for news. Yesterday Senior, you were sending out news flashes and we were seeing them in real time on all three major television networks which had suspended programming to broadcast live from the scene in Boston. We are amazingly connected in this country.

Most East Coast cities have similar political slants to their newspapers and that feels familiar to people from that area and so The Daily Sun's is unfamiliar to them and irritating.

Did I avoid being political?

Gracie, you are OBVIOUSLY a repub....I mean a democr...uh, a libertar...well, you are too political for me to tell for sure. ;)

oh. I am a moderate though.

And I only own a squirt gun.

I grew up with the Bulletin and the Philadelphia Inquirer

We're apolitical so the political slant doesn't matter one iota.
It's more the human interest stories and other sections of the newspaper that interest us. The Boston Globe always had great writers.......

I grew up reading all of the New York City newspapers as my dad would buy all the morning editions and evening editions plus the New Jersey papers where we lived.......he was a big newspaper reader......as was my Irish stepdad. There was no 24 hour t.v. news in those days.....so everyone looked forward to the newspapers.

p.s. Those postings of mine weren't necessarily for those glued to their t.v. sets as were all of us.......
.................but for those reading the news while traveling , etc. via their I-phones.....or tablets.

I was "sharing the hyperlinks to the breaking news" for people who were out and about, and particularly those from the Boston area or with ties to Boston , of which there are many.......as many of our connections either went to university in Boston or work in hospitals in Boston, etc.......or work in business there as well........so lots of folks in our neighborhood alone who have relatives and friends in Boston.........and I am pretty sure TV as well has their share of folks connected to Boston.

Our town is inviting the ones who did not finish the Boston Marathon to come and run in our race upcoming......

I believe my Aunt, who we lived with read the NY Sun which eventually went out of business. She then switched to the NY Herald Tribune. This is from my years during the 40's and 50's

The Detroit free press and the local hometown paper the Wyandotte news herald.

The Air Force Times and the local paper where we were stationed.

Having spent the vast majority of my childhood going to base schools, I feel very fortunate to have experienced the diversity of that type of environment.

Speaking of which, one of the biggest drawbacks to TV that I've seen....is a palpable lack of diversity.

Maybe I'll even start a thread on it.

On the other hand, methinks it could get ugly very quickly. :(

I remember the Boston Record American being delivered to our door every evening. And if I remember, we got the Boston
Sunday Globe.

I mostly remember the Chicago Tribune, although sometimes the Chicago News-Sun and Waukegan News Sun were around the house...

The Cleveland Plain Dealer in the morning and the Cleveland Press at night. Remember when we would get an evening paper to read the news??? The Press went out a long time ago and I understand the Plain Dealer is suffering - young people don't read the paper - they get all their news onlline. Can't imagine not starting my day with a cup of coffee and the paper!:eek:

The New York Daily News, the DailyMirror and the Herald Tribune - all of which I remember my mother reading cover to cover.
