Major Medical Insurance Transportability
Does anybody know what is planned for this fall? I had heard that some insurance companies are planning to roll out new plans this October.
As you may know if you by your own health insurance (pre Medicare) it is not transferable from one state to another even within the same company. The companies can and do refuse new customers for pre-existing conditions. One of the Obama changes is suppose to correct this but I haven't heard how or what the companies are required to do. We bought in 2008 but couldn't move here full time because we had to maintain our Northern residency to keep our health insurance. Any how anybody know anything new? |

On Oct 1, 2013 each state will have a list of health exchanges available for purchase. If the state elects not to set up these exchanges, the federal government will set up the exchanges for them. These health care plans, that will be made available to the public, can not refuse coverage because of pre-exiting conditions. These plans also will not be allowed to charge women more for their coverage than men, which has been the case in the past. The coverage that is selected will then be available Jan 1, 2014. |
Health Insurance not Medicare
I am very anxious to have this transportability issue come to pass. We presently have to maintain a northern residence to keep our health insurance BC/BS.
Has anyone heard of any new movement on this issue. The sooner the better for us. |
My advice on this is to speak to an independent Insurance agent...one who handles more than one insurance. We have that offered here in T.V.---make an app't and they'll give you the information as they know it.

Any new Info
I will take the advise of Not golfer when I get to TV in Oct. But was wondering if anybody has heard anything new. I would like to make plans to move permanently to TV before I leave this year up North.

Sailer....your guess is as good as anyone's. NOONE knows what's new until after October 1st.!! Even the insurance folks haven't gotten the word. I recently checked with our agent here re: changes as we're with the USF group here in T.V. along with having Preferred Care Partners as our supplement. I was told at that time I'd have to wait...she knew nothing (yet)!!!

The situation is not yet clear especially in states with no plans to participate in the health care exchanges. As each state was given the option to have commercial carriers compete within the state for new enrollees there is of course costs to implement such a major change in our health care insurance market. Florida not only refused to participate but refused to accept federal funding to help its citizens be informed of the options and make the transition easier. So here we are, waiting. There is blame enough for all parties to share. In the meantime the real benefits which the ACA can bring to you are being held hostage to ideology. This website will be a good place to look for ongoing updated information. https://www.healthcare.gov/what-is-t...e-marketplace/

Very well stated. There was an article in the newspaper this week that quoted Secretary Sebelius as saying because of the refusal of Florida to participate, HHS is still shopping around for carriers to take part in the exchanges. Will try to find a link. |
For Individual Health Care under 65 - Governor Scott elected the Federal Exchange so there will be a Federal Marketplace Exchange for Floridians. You will also be able to buy off the Exchange through Independent Agents. Premiums for the Affordable Care Act (ACA) Metal Plans for Florida have not yet been announced. I am an Independent Agent and anxiously waiting for all the information pertaining to the Affordable Care Act (ACA). I am not certain about portability as I write this. I believe you will still have to reapply as you move from state to state, as each individual state made their options to either participate in the Federal Exchange or set up State Exchanges or those state that even took Federal assistance. Anyone with Individual Health Plans will need to check with their carriers to see if the existing plan (benefits and premiums) will be protected to December 30, 2014 and not be subject to the ACA changes and higher premiums and health care taxes associated with the ACA. Some carriers may not lock in your benefits and premiums until December 30, 2014 and may referred you to the state's preference Marketplace Exchange.

I was able to keep my BC/BS plan from PA with the same premium and everything. It is acceptable as long as the provider accepts it. I use The Villages Health System and have had no issue. I go to the doctor and pay my $20 co-pay, that's it. They process the paperwork just like when I lived up north. My plan renews every June but since a lot of changes are coming in 2014 I was just this week given the opportunity to renew my current plan now and have it go until December 2014 at the rate I'm currently paying. I understand the rates are going up 15% in 2014 so I was happy to lock mine in for the next 17 months at least !!

Any New news
Has there been any new news regarding this issue. The new Affordable care Act is suppose to happen soon. Just wondering if any agents or TOTVers have heard anything.
The term Transportability may be the wrong term. The real problem is to purchase major medical when you are under 65 and moving from one state to another. Tom |
